    MacMontage 23 and Alfred 1.2

Initially this started out as a standard macMontage show, but ended up covering a lot of the recent Alfred update.

The first part is a look at the new features introduced in Alfred 1.2, a fairly major update with some great integration with 1Password, and now support for large type.

I also include a peek behind the curtain to show you how I've configured my new Thunderbolt drive into multiple partitions, as well as the reasons why I did it, and how I manage them.

Finishing off with looking at running some AppleScripts in various ways to unmount partitions.

The imminent closure of MobileMe is rapidly drawing nearer. Apple are due to turn off all MobileMe related services on June 30th 2012.

This week, I take you through what is needed to migrate your iWeb websites, currently hosted on MobileMe, to an external web hosting service.

It's easier than you think, especially as I show you the process step by step.

There are even some discount codes to make it less painful.

Although Apple have stopped distributing iWeb, it's still supported and should be for some time to come. This means the urgency isn't to move your website off iWeb, but to move the website to another hosting provider. I'll look at moving iWeb websites to another software platform in the future, but this week I concentrate on setting up an account with an external hosting provider and migrating your iWeb website to a new home.

I take a look at hosting services provided by UK2.NET/WestHost & SiteGround.

I also take a look at a "lightweight" solution for small, low traffic websites.

One other consideration is the need to replace your current MobileMe galleries if they are embedded in your iWeb website. I offer up a simple alternative but will focus on replacements for MobileMe Gallery functionality in a future show.

This full tutorial includes sections on:

    • Backup Your iWeb Media
    • iWeb Hosting Migration
    • Publishing via DropBox
    • Using An External Web Hosting Provider
    • UK2.net Web Hosting
    • UK2.net Signup Process
    • Using CyberDuck with UK2.net
    • Changing To FTP Site Publishing Settings
    • Setting Up an FTP Account In cPanel
    • SiteGround Sign Up Process
    • Testing The SiteGround FTP Settings
    • Changing To FTP Site Publishing Settings #2
    • Replacing MobileMe Gallery Pages

The discounts for setting up a hosting account with UK2.net are:

SCREENCASTSB30 – 30% off our site builder hosting

    SCREENCASTDN30 – 30% Off domain names

SCREENCASTHOST – 30% off web hosting packages

SCREENCASTDNS – 100% off DNS Management

SCREENCASTVPS – 20% off VPS cloud

    SCREENCASTVPN – First month free

These codes are valid up to May 2013 and will be applied to the entire length of the service you order.

  • Aperture 3 - Part 1 Description

Aperture 3 is the latest version of Apples flagship photo management application.

Previous versions have been aimed squarely at the professional photographer, but with this new release, Aperture has been repositioned as a tool for both prosumers and professionals. One of the reasons many people have held off moving to Aperture was the inclusion of Faces and Places in iPhoto '09. Without them, Aperture 2 was not really a compelling upgrade for iPhoto users.

All has been fixed now in Aperture 3 with the inclusion of both these features and over 200+ new improvements.

Aperture 3 now gives ""Pro performance with iPhoto simplicity""!

As I've never covered Aperture before, I thought I'd best start from the ground up and cover the basic functionality in this weeks show. No prior knowledge of Aperture is assumed and I approach the subject as an iPhoto user considering moving over to Aperture. Next week I'll take a look at some of the new and enhanced features.

In this weeks show I cover:

    iMovie 11 Update - Part 1

    Writing Kit for the iPad

It seems like there are hundreds of text editing applications available for the iPad, quite a few with Markdown and DropBox support built in.

Understandable really, as the iPad is the perfect tool for creating documents on the go, with Dropbox allowing you to sync with your Mac, and Markdown giving you the ultimate in portability and flexibility. But which iPad application do you choose? Well, I must have tried them all, but I've finally found one that I most comfortable with, one that is simple to use, but very powerful.

That application is Writing Kit for iPad

  • Writing Kit for the iPad Description

The iPad really came into it's own on my recent trip to WWDC. Two seven hour flights, each way, gave me plenty of time to watch a few films and write a few documents and blog posts. Even though my 13 MacBook Air is lightweight and portable, it's still just a bit too big to sit nicely on the seat tray in Economy (or coach to our US friends).

The iPad however, is just perfect.

I've been looking for the perfect writing app for the iPad for ages, and must have tried everyone on the market. There always seemed to be just one or two features missing. I'd settled on the strategy of using plain text files, formatted using the Markdown language as the perfect solution for portability. Files created on the iPad could be whisked across to my Mac without any worries of cross application incompatibility. My search seems to have come to an end with Writing Kit for the iPad.

Writing Kit has full support for DropBox allowing you to seamlessly transfer your file to your Mac. A dedicated keyboard takes away the hassle of trying to remember Markdown commands or fighting with the standard keyboard to access symbols and other characters. A good selection of fonts, resizable with a pinch or the fingers as well as a unique way of moving your cursor, character by character, or word by word with just a few taps. Working on a long document? Writing Kit also allows you to view an outline of your document and jump to any heading quickly and easily.

Want to create blog posts with images from your camera roll? Writing Kit has integration with CloudApp, allowing you to select an image, upload to the cloud and insert an image link in a single process. If you're using Writing Kit to create a document requiring research on the net, it's built in research tools and browser means you can do everything within the application - no need to keep switching back and forth with Safari. Once you have your quote, link or image from the web, Writing Kit allows you to paste them into your document with just a few taps, all correctly formatted and annotated. There's also integration with services like InstaPaper, Evernote, Delicious, Pinboard. . too many to mention.

This week's tutorial takes you through all the main components of Writing Kit, demonstrating many of it's features.

A slight departure for this week as I'm covering an application that's been out for a considerable time, in fact, one that might even be upgraded in the very near future! The application is the word processor and page layout application from Apple - Pages'09.

Pages '09 is part of the iWork '09 suite of applications (packaged along with Keynote and Numbers) and is an essential purchase for any Mac user.

I've previously covered Pages before (SCO0049 - Basic Pages and SCO0142 - Pages '08), but I can't believe I've never covered the current version of the application, something I really needed to put right before the next version appears.

So in this week's show I cover some of the updated and enhanced features of Pages '09 such as:

    • Introduction to Pages 09
    • Full Screen View Styles,
    • TOC & Outlining
    • Paragraph Styles
    • Creating a Table of Contents

  • iOS 4. 3 AirPlay & iTunes Media Description

The show this week takes a look at the new AirPlay feature, and discusses why I’m making the change in more detail. I also show you the tools and techniques for moving my assorted media collection into iTunes format, suitable to be played on any modern Apple device. With the launch of iOS 4.3 this week, Apple have made a significant change to AirPlay. As well as being able to use AirPlay to wirelessly stream your media from your Mac to your Apple TV or Airport Express, it’s now also possible to stream the media stored in your iTunes library on your Mac, to your handheld iOS device.

Yes, all your music and video stored on your Mac can now be played back on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, wirelessly!

This is a huge advance and is significant enough to make me change my whole strategy on how I consume media in the home. Despite being a huge fan of Plex and using a Mac mini for my home media center, I’ve decided to re-encode all my media to iTunes compatible format, and move to just an Apple TV for playback on my large screen TV.

The show this week takes a look at the new AirPlay feature, and discusses why I’m making the change in more detail. I also show you the tools and techniques for moving my assorted media collection into iTunes format, suitable to be played on any modern Apple device. If you haven’t yet taken the plunge in digitising your media collection, the show takes you through the process of “ripping” music from your CDs, creating standard definition video files from your DVDs, as well as creating high definition video files from Blu-Ray disks, all compatible for playing on your Apple TV, iPhone 4, iPod touch and iPad 1 or 2.

But digitising your media isn’t enough.

You also need a rich source of metadata to correctly label and describe your media, as well as supplying artwork to make your collection look good! So I also take a look at some commercial packages that allow you to seamlessly add metadata and artwork to your music and video collections, making them perfect to view and browse on your Apple devices.
