SCO0250 - Mac Montage 15

Following on from last week's Mac Montage, there were a few other bits and pieces I needed to catch up on, so this week, it's another Mac Montage!

This week's show covers:

WideMail Un-Install: Although I've had zero problems with this mail plugin, some people have experienced some issues and wanted to uninstall the plugin. This section shows you how to uninstall WideMail correctly to avoid any issues, as well as a solution if you have uninstalled and hit problems.

MobileMe Mail Beta: Apple have recently released a new version of their webmail service and unusually, are running it as a beta service. This section shows you how to sign up for the beta, reviews the new user interface, describes some of the new and improved features and shows you how to take advantage of the most significant new feature - server side rules.

maillogo
TotalFinder: A new utility to add some extra functionality to the Finder in Snow Leopard. This new utility adds "chrome" like tabs to the standard Finder application, along with a dual pane mode. My favourite is the inclusion of Visor mode, the ability to have the Finder pop up from the bottom of the screen in a fixed pane mode - very cool!

Enhanced AppleScript for Extracting Email Attachments: Following on from last weeks segment on using DropBox to sync files between your Mac and iPad, but more importantly, how to email attachments into DropBox, this segment brings you a more complex AppleScript which actually reduces the complexity of the process. The revised AppleScript removes the need for an additional mail account and the Automator actions. This simplified workflow allows you to send emails with attachments to your normal Apple mail account, and identify attachments to be extracted using the Subject line - much easier! Much appreciation to Mark Dalton for publishing the script on the ScreenCastsOnine forum.

SCO0209 - Managing Multiple Macs - Part 1

twomacs
One of the problems that viewers have with ScreenCastsOnline is that because I cover so much stuff, it's sometimes difficult to either know where to start, or how to gather all the information together under a single subject. This week's show is an experiment to address this by pulling together mainly information I've published before, with some new information thrown into the mix.

The genesis of the show is that I've received many requests on "How to effectively manage multiple Macs" and whilst preparing for the show, I realised that many of the areas have already been addressed, but in separate shows.

So this week, I've tried to pull all the information together in a two part episode, discussing how I manage my multiple Mac setup and the reasons why I use the tools and techniques that I do. The show is heavily littered with references to previous shows, so if you want to go back and receive more in depth information on any of the tools and techniques, you can!

In this weeks show, I cover:
  • Synchronising settings with MobileMe
  • Using iDisk
  • MobileMe iDisk Application
  • Back To My Mac
  • Managing EMail
  • Sharing Documents using DropBox
  • Sharing information using EverNote
  • Replicating Files & Folders using ChronoSync
Next week, I'll finish off by examining various strategies for managing multiple iPhoto, Aperture and iTunes libraries, along with some workflow suggestions to keep everything in sync.

SCO0161 - MobileMe Web Services [Extra! members only]

mobileme logo
Finally, MobileMe has stayed up long enough to complete my short series of MobileMe related shows. Despite lots of moaning and groaning (including from me and the rest of the guys over on the MacRoundtable podcast!), it looks like MobileMe is finally starting to stabilise and is now a usable service, despite some holes still waiting to be filled.

This week I take a look at some of the Web services and components that make up Apple new cloud computing platform and look at some tips on using them and some “workarounds” that may help you out if you use subscribed calendars. This weeks show covers:
  • Using Fluid to create a MobileMe Site Specific Browser (SSB)
  • MobileMe Web Email & Contacts
  • MobileMe Web Calendar
  • Syncronisng "Subscribed" Calendars with MobileMe
  • Google Calendar and BusySync
  • MobileMe Web Galleries
  • MobileMe iDisk
  • MobileMe Settings
That probably finishes off MobileMe for a while!

SCO0157 - MobileMe Setup and iTunes 7.7 [Extra! Only]

mobileme logo
What a week for Apple! First iTunes 7.7, then the App Store, then MobileMe and finally the iPhone 3G. All in three days!

In the spirit of such an ambitious program, I thought I’d cover the rollout of MobileMe and what you needed to do to setup your Mac and iPhone using the MobileMe installer.

Leaving the show for the very last minute, I waited until Apple started the 6 hour migration task and then proceeded to cover the installer based on a pre-release of the utility. Little did I know that the 6 hour migration window scheduled by Apple would turn out to be so much longer. In fact over 24 hours later it still hadn’t finished or stabilised.

So this weeks show is really the first part of using MobileMe, and I’ve had to leave the web applications until they are generally available. I also took some time to look at the new iTunes release and the brand new App store in iTunes.

So a relatively short show this week but enough to help you out with your MobileMe migration.

SCO0119 - Single eMail Inbox for the iPhone and Mac

Struggling with finding the optimum email solution to use with your iPhone? Do you have multiple email accounts that you'd like to process in a single universal inbox? Would you like to have all your email synchronised and available from any device and from any location?

If so this weeks show may be for you.

It's my personal journey from traditional POP based email clients through web based solutions to finally a scheme that gives me the flexibility and control to access all my email from anywhere. It's all about IMAP and harnessing the power of IMAP using .Mac Mail to give you the best of all worlds when accessing your mail. But IMAP is just part of the solution. You need to have a way of channelling all your mail into a single inbox.

Even if you're not an iPhone user, the recently expanded .Mac service gives you some huge benefits over more traditional POP or web based solutions.

This week show covers:

  • Introduction to POP email
  • Introduction to Web based email
  • Utilising GMail Mail Fetcher
  • Introduction to .Mac Mail
  • Configuring POP, GMAIL and .Mac
  • Creating a single universal Inbox

Update - As of today (24th October 2007 - a couple of weeks following this shows publication) Google are slowly introducing IMAP support into gmail accounts. This removes the need to forward GMail into .Mac for the IMAP capabilities of .Mac. Of course, if you still want the advanced facilities of .Mac under Leopard. This solution is still valid.

If you're an Extra! member and would like to download the presentations as mentioned in this weeks show, you can download them from this page.

As mentioned in the show, I'd really appreciate it if you could complete the ScreenCastsOnline survey form at:

SCO0111 - Ilife 08 - First Impressions

Picturesque
Well it's finally here, along with iWork 08, and surprise, surprise, you don't need Leopard!

Apple have released iLife 08 and I couldn't resist quickly running through some of the main changes to all the applications, even though I'd only had a few hours to play with it.

In this week's show, I take you through the installation with some extra tips for iWeb users. Once installed, there's a quick introduction to all of the apps with a little more in depth look at iMovie 08.

The good news is that there is tons of material here for new screencasts so expect to see more detailed screencasts on all the iLife 08 applications along with iWork 08 over the next few months!

This is a full free show (but only in 640x360 with no chapters for non members). As mentioned in the show, I'll try and do at least one show a month on one of the new versions of the iLife apps (and iWork) but they won't all be free shows. To get the full set, you'll need to be an Extra! member.
