SCO0264 - Screen, File, Printer & Scanner Sharing in OSX [Members Show]

Apple - Mac OS X - What Is Mac OS X - All Applications and Utilities
In last week's show, I covered sharing files with friends and colleagues using third party software and services. Of course, OSX also allows you to share lots of things locally if you're connected to a Local Area Network (LAN) or Wifi network. There are a whole host of built in services that allow you to share your screen, share files and folders, access shared printers and scanners, setup local web servers to share websites and even share your Internet connection with others around you.

This show is the first of a two part series looking at what sharing services are available on Snow Leopard and how you configure and use them.

With the built in Bonjour zero configuration technology included with OSX, it's surprisingly easy!

In this week's show I take you through Screen Sharing, File Sharing, Printer and Scanner Sharing. In detail, the show covers:
  • Screen Sharing in OSX
  • Disabling Sharing for Security
  • Setting up Screen Sharing
  • Bonjour Zero Configuration
  • Screen Sharing Configuration
  • ScreenSharingMenulet
  • File Sharing in OSX
  • Setting up Shares
  • Browsing Shares via The Finder
  • Setting up a Printer in OSX
  • Sharing a Printer in OSX
  • Scanner Sharing in OSX
  • Accessing a Shared Scanner with Image Capture

SCO0262 - OmniFocus for iPad [Free Show]

OmniFocus iPad
This week's show features an iPad application recently launched to critical acclaim, and seen by many to be a "must have" application for the iPad. Some have even deemed the release of the application to be an equivalent of the PC's "VisCalc" moment!

The application is OmniFocus for iPad by The Omni Group. OmniFocus is a powerful task management application for the Mac, iPhone and now iPad. It can be utilised to support the "Getting Things Done" or GTD methodology, or you can use it to create your own system of task management.

The iPad version can be used as a standalone application, or you can use the robust Internet or LAN based syncing technologies for a completely integrated task management system across all your Apple devices. OmniFocus for iPad has been designed from the ground up to work beautifully with the iPad. The standard Project and Context views have been re-designed and a brand new Forecast view has been introduced. Forecast view allows you to see all your Actions scheduled on a daily basis for the next week and beyond. This makes it simple to assess your workload for the week, and even easier to re-schedule or re-arrange tasks to remove the overloaded days.

The iPad version of OmniFocus is also optimised for location - your can easily assign locations to contexts and view them on the large enhanced map view.

Another powerful feature of OmniFocus for iPad is not new but has been given a new lease of life, and that's the Review process. Often overlooked, the review process allows you to keep on top of all your projects and actions. The new Review view makes this really easy on the iPad.

The show will take your through all these facets of OmniFocus and more. In detail the show covers:
  • OmniFocus Introduction
  • OmniFocus Inbox
  • Adding Information to Actions
  • Viewing & Organising Projects
  • Contexts in OmniFocus
  • Location Contexts
  • Forecast and Review Views
  • Review View
  • Inbox Tips, Safari, Syncing & Perspectives
  • Sending Actions via Email
  • Safari Bookmarklet
  • Syncing via MobileMe
  • Missing Perspectives?
This week's show is a full free show and has not been endorsed or sponsored by The Omni Group.

SCO0261 - Personal Cloud Storage with Pogoplug [Members Show]

pogoplug external
Recent years have seen a boom in the number of services providing Cloud based storage. iDisk, Dropbox, Amazon S3, Box.net to name but a few. All are secure, resilient services with some offering free elements. To some people however, cloud based storage is not an option.

Concerns about security, giving data to third parties, potential downtime, capacity limits or just the sheer difficulty of uploading all the date you'd like to access via the web in the first place.
  • What if you could have your own private datacenter at home or at the office?
  • How about transferring data to your own personal cloud storage at LAN or Gigabit speeds?
  • How about adding terabytes of data to your shared storage pool instantly, just by plugging in an extra drive?
This week's show allows you to do all this and more, using a relatively inexpensive hardware device - Pogoplug.

Just plug the Pogoplug into your router at the home or Office and connect up to 4 USB drives. All the information contained on the drives is immediately accessible via the web. Just logon to the Pogoplug service and access all your data from any web browser from anywhere with an internet connection.
  • You can even access your data via the Pogoplug application on you iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.
  • Share individual files and or folders with friends or colleagues with a few simple clicks.
  • Utilise "Active Copy" to copy files or folders from you Mac or Pc directly to the Pogoplug automatically for web access with the added benefit of automatic backups.
  • Store media files on your Pogoplug to stream music via the web, even transcode movies to view via a web browser.
  • You can even copy files to your Pogoplug from your computer on your local network at LAN speeds using the Pogoplug drive application available for Mac, PC and Linux. Your Pogoplug drives (along with files shared with you) appear as shared devices right within the Finder, allowing you to treat them just like normal drives.
All this can be accomplished with no monthly contracts or fees for life, just the initial purchase price of the Pogoplug and external drives.

In detail, this weeks Extra! members show covers:
  • Introduction to Pogoplug
  • Pogoplug Installation
  • Pogoplug Drive Application
  • Active Copy
  • Sharing with the Pogoplug
  • Sharing considerations
  • Receiving Shared Files and Folders
  • Pogoplug Settings
  • Adding a Drobo via USB to Pogoplug
  • Accessing Pogoplug via iOS Devices

SCO0260 - MacMontage 17 [Members Show]

A lot happened in the Mac world this week!

New iMacs launched, new Mac Pros and Apple Cinema displays announced, as well as a brand new input device - The Apple Magic Trackpad. As well as these announcements, Apple also released Safari 5.0.1 which included the launch of the new official Safari Extensions Gallery. So time for a Mac Montage I think!

Images
This week's show covers a first look at the new Apple Magic Trackpad and some of the new enhanced gestures, not just for the trackpad but also for Apple laptops with multitouch enabled. I also take a look at some third party software that allows you to use the new trackpad for signing electronic documents.

Apple - Safari - Safari Extensions Gallery-2Apple - Safari - Safari Extensions Gallery-3
With the introduction of the official Safari Extensions Gallery, Apple have made available many new extensions that install within Safari with a single click.

I take a look at installing and using two new extensions - Twitter for Safari and Coda Notes (A great way to annotate and send markups of live websites).

applejack
I also take a look at one of the most useful Mac troubleshooting tools - AppleJack. This is a low level suite of applications that allow you to repair your Mac, even in the event of your Mac being unable to load the GUI. Install in advance and when needed, just boot your Mac into single user mode and run AppleJack. This section takes you through the installation and running of AppleJack in auto pilot.

Finally, an extended wrap up section where I explain some of the issues with the new MobileMe CAlendar beta and BusyCal, along with the promised review of the recent ScreenCastsOnline survey on including iPad and iPhone content on the show.

In detail the show covers:
  • Magic Trackpad
  • Autograph for Magic Trackpad
  • Safari Extensions
  • Twitter Extension for Safari
  • Coda Notes Extension
  • AppleJack
  • Wrap Up & Questionnaire Results
  • BusyCal & MobileMe Calendar Beta

SCO0259 - iOS 4 (Part 2) and iMovie for iPhone [Members Show]

ios4 logo
As promised, here is the conclusion of the iOS 4 walkthrough. As I covered the majority of the new features in the previous show, this first part of this week's show is a round up of some of the minor new features that may have missed your radar together with a look at the new iBooks application. I cover:
  • Using a Bluetooth Keyboard
  • Spelling Checker
  • Inserting Special Characters
  • Drop Pin in Maps
  • IBooks

iMovei for iPhone-1
In the second part of this week's show, I take a look at the groundbreaking iMovie app on the iPhone 4.

Everyone expected HD video capture on the iPhone 4, but no one expected a fully featured video editing application on the iPhone as well. This little app really is a masterstroke by Apple, not only in its execution, but turning the iPhone into a portable video editing machine, allowing people to easily and quickly create movies form the various video clips and stills they take with their iPhone.

How many times have you have taken lots of video clips on your iPhone 3GS, only to have them sync'd to their Mac and then forgotten about. Now you can spend a few minutes to assemble a great HD movie and share it with friends and family directly from the iPhone 4 itself.

Although iMovie for iPhone is simple to use, it's not really very intuitive, at least, not until you’ve been shown the basics. This section of the show does just that, taking you from soup to nuts in creating, editing and sharing movies from your iPhone 4.

In detail, this section covers:
  • iMovie Themes
  • iMovie User Interface
  • Adding Clips to the Timeline
  • Working with the Timeline
  • Editing Clips
  • Applying Clip Settings
  • Editing Transitions
  • Adding Still Images
  • Exporting & Sharing Movies
As mentioned in this week’s show, I’d appreciate your feedback on the ScreenCastsOnline survey this month - Link to Survey

SCO0258 - Using Tags in OSX - Part 2 [Free Show]

OpenMetaLogoFull512asmall
Another Mac only show this week, following on from last week with a look at some of the more fully featured tagging applications using the OpenMeta standard..

Tagging has long been used to advantage in many applications and web services, as a way to organise and retrieve data effectively and efficiently. A tag is simply a keyword that you can assign to a piece of information or object. The beauty of using tags is the complete flexibility it offers. Assign multiple tags to an object and you have complete control on how you structure your data for future use.

Freed from the shackles of a fixed "folder" hierarchy, never again do you have to waste time pondering “where shall I save this document?” in some convoluted directory structure. Just add the relevant tags to the file and let the speed and power of your Mac retrieve it for you instantly.

Ever wanted to "file" a document in two places at once? Well with tags, it's simply a matter of assigning multiple tags and the problem is solved.

Up until now, the only system wide option you had for tags was using keywords in the Spotlight comments field. It worked but was extremely limiting. There were no standards imposed and applications were not able to interact or share a common set of tags.

These limitations are now lifted by OpenMeta - an open sourced, simple, scalable metatdata system for OSX.

Rapidly becoming adopted as a standard method of handling and sharing tags system wide, many of the top Mac applications are now being updated to take advantage of the benefits of OpenMeta.

This week's show takes you through two applications that have embraced the OpenMeta standard of tagging - HoudaSpot v3 and Tags by GravityApps. In detail, this weeks show covers:
  • Syncing OpenMeta Tags with Dropbox
  • HoudaSpot V3
  • Houdaspot Overview
  • Tagging in HoudahSpot
  • Tags Applicatication by GravityApps
  • Tagging Webpages
  • Tagging in the Finder
  • Tagging Emails
  • Tagging Contacts
  • Tagging in iTunes
  • Tagging in iPhoto
  • Tagging in Applications
  • Using the Tag Browser
  • Searching using Tags Application

SCO0255 - iOS 4 Walkthrough - Part 1 [Members Show]

iphone4_2up_front_side_small
How could I ignore iOS 4 this week? Add in the excitement of the iPhone 4 launch, and I had to cover it didn't I!

So this week's show is a walkthrough of some of the key features of iOS 4, not really to review them, but to help you make use of them.

In detail, the show covers:

Organising Apps with Folders - Folders are the smart new way to manage the hundreds (or even thousands) of apps we accumulate on our iPhones. I show you how to create, maintain and delete folders. both on the phone and using iTunes 9.2

Enhanced Spotlight Search - With the removal of the ever so handy double press of the Home button to drop you into the Spotlight search window. I show you a neat little trick to replicate this action. In addition, I look at Spotlight configuration and some new searches available to Spotlight.

Multitasking - This section starts off with a description of Apple's take on multitasking and how it differs from traditional multitasking. I also cover some of the types of apps that use Apples new specific background APIs.

Fast App Switching - Not multitasking in the truest sense but a great technique that Apple have adopted to allow developers to "freeze" and instantly restart their applications via iOS 4. This section shows you how to use this technique to switch rapidly between applications to increase you productivity. This section also hows you how to access, manage and even terminate Apps via the multitasking dock.

Email Enhancements in iOS 4 - One of the most highly anticipated features in the availability of a unified inbox. This section demonstrates how the unified inbox works and how you can now select which email address to use when replying or sending emails. Very handy!

Enhanced Calendar Support in iOS 4 - This weeks walkthrough finishes off with a look at some of the new calendar integration with iCal and GMail.

SCO0251 - Pages ’09 [Members Show]

PAges
A slight departure for this week as I'm covering an application that's been out for a considerable time, in fact, one that might even be upgraded in the very near future!

The application is the word processor and page layout application from Apple - Pages’09.

Pages ’09 is part of the iWork ’09 suite of applications (packaged along with Keynote and Numbers) and is an essential purchase for any Mac user.

I've previously covered Pages before (SCO0049 - Basic Pages and SCO0142 - Pages ’08), but I can’t believe I’ve never covered the current version of the application, something I really needed to put right before the next version appears.

So in this week's show I cover some of the updated and enhanced features of Pages '09 such as:
  • Introduction to Pages 09
  • Full Screen View
  • Styles, TOC & Outlining
  • Paragraph Styles
  • Creating a Table of Contents
  • Dynamic Outlining
  • Mail Merge
  • Address Labels
  • Citations & Formula Support
  • Creating Citations
  • Inserting a Formula

SCO0250 - Mac Montage 15

Following on from last week's Mac Montage, there were a few other bits and pieces I needed to catch up on, so this week, it's another Mac Montage!

This week's show covers:

WideMail Un-Install: Although I've had zero problems with this mail plugin, some people have experienced some issues and wanted to uninstall the plugin. This section shows you how to uninstall WideMail correctly to avoid any issues, as well as a solution if you have uninstalled and hit problems.

Links: Website
mail
MobileMe Mail Beta: Apple have recently released a new version of their webmail service and unusually, are running it as a beta service. This section shows you how to sign up for the beta, reviews the new user interface, describes some of the new and improved features and shows you how to take advantage of the most significant new feature - server side rules.

maillogo
TotalFinder: A new utility to add some extra functionality to the Finder in Snow Leopard. This new utility adds "chrome" like tabs to the standard Finder application, along with a dual pane mode. My favourite is the inclusion of Visor mode, the ability to have the Finder pop up from the bottom of the screen in a fixed pane mode - very cool!

Links: Website
totalfinder
Enhanced AppleScript for Extracting Email Attachments: Following on from last weeks segment on using DropBox to sync files between your Mac and iPad, but more importantly, how to email attachments into DropBox, this segment brings you a more complex AppleScript which actually reduces the complexity of the process. The revised AppleScript removes the need for an additional mail account and the Automator actions. This simplified workflow allows you to send emails with attachments to your normal Apple mail account, and identify attachments to be extracted using the Subject line - much easier! Much appreciation to Mark Dalton for publishing the script on the ScreenCastsOnine forum.

SCO0249 - MacMontage 14 [Members Show]

Time for another MacMontage!

proxydocs-1
This time it's a three parter. The first part is all about using the OSX Proxy icon. The what? The OSX Proxy icon! This is the small icon that sits in the title bar of the Finder and many other OSX applications. It's not there just for show, but can be made to do some pretty useful things. This week's show explains just what you can do with it including:

Using OS X Proxy Icon
Proxy Icon in the Finder
Proxy Icon in Applications
Proxy Icon in Safari

dropbox
The second part of the show is slightly different in that I take you through a detailed five stage process on setting up a method of using email to send attachments into your Dropbox folder structure.
mail
Designed with a specific purpose of assisting easy file transfer between your desktop Macs and your iPad, the technique uses many different applications and features of OSX demonstrating just how powerful your Mac can be.

Automator
It doesn't matter if you're not an iPad user, as the techniques and processes are just as relevant if you're a Mac only, or mac and iPhone user. The techniques and processes covered include:
  • Step 1 - Setting up a separate Gmail Account
  • Step 2 - Add Gmail account into Mail.app
  • Step 3 - Creating an Automator Workflow
  • Step 4 - Creating an AppleScript for Mail Rule
  • Step 5 - Setting & Testing Mail Rules
The third and final part is a brief look at the new Dropbox client on the iPad.

two ipads
I demonstrate how easy it is to access and view your Dropbox files from your iPad, including the files added to Dropbox using the Email method covered in the earlier part of the show.

I also show you how easy it is to get your Dropbox files into iWork on the iPad plus how to export them via Mail to put back into Dropbox.

Finally, a quick suggestion for maintaining a single master copy of your documents either in Dropbox or on your iPad.

SCO0247 - Transmit 4 [Members Show]

transmit4
Hold the press!

I abandoned my current plans for this weeks show the second I laid my eyes on a significant new application release this week.

Panic Inc. launched a new version of Transmit - the premier Mac OSX File Transfer application, now released as version 4.

Transmit 3 was released in 2005 and although Panic have kept updating the application with minor new features and bug fixes, Transmit 4 brings the application completely up to date with a virtual re-write of the application and a gorgeous new User Interface.

With support for iDisk, FTP, SFTP, Amazon S3 and WebDav, Transmit 4 allows you to seamlessly connect to the multitude of storage solutions on the web. One of the core new features of Transmit 4 is the incorporation of MacFuse technology allowing you to connect to and mount any of these external remote file systems right into the Finder, allowing you to treat them just like local drives. Drag and drop files from your desktop straight onto Amazon S3 or your FTP server, straight from the Finder.

The show covers most of the new features, including some you may never had thought you needed!

The full members show covers:
  • Installation of Transmit (incl MacFuse)
  • Transmit & File Transfer Overview
  • Using The Local Browser Pane
  • Places Grid
  • Setting View Options
  • Setting Up Remote Services
  • Setting up an FTP Service
  • Bandwidth Throttling
  • Setting up Favorites
  • Mounting Remote File Systems as a Disk
  • Organising Favorites
  • Creating & Using Droplets
  • Using Sync
  • Using DockSend
  • Using Transmit with Bonjour

SCO0246 - Managing Passwords with 1Password V3

1passwordicon
Time to revisit an old friend, one of the most essential Mac applications around - 1Password.

1Password is the outstanding password manager and auto form filler from Agile Web Solutions. It's an application I've covered before, but it's recently had a complete revamp, with lots of new and improved features.

Resplendent in it's gorgeous new user interface design, the changes in 1Password 3 run much deeper than on first glance.

This show is not just an update show, but takes you back to basics with 1Password along with reviewing most of the new features in the application. Even if you're an experience 1Password user, I'm confident you'll find some features of the application you didn't know existed. Internet security needs to be taken seriously and all to often, we fall into the trap of using the same password on multiple systems. If your password is compromised on one system, then all the other systems are wide open. Add in the ever increasing sophistication of "Phishing" websites, and identity theft becomes areal concern.

1Password v3 allows you to create and seamlessly manage strong multiple passwords across all your services. Better still, 1Password identifies which website you're accessing and can supply your login details automatically, from keyboard shortcuts or through deep integration with a wide range of leading Mac browsers. But it's not just limited to passwords, 1Password has been extended to cover all aspects of your digital identity and online presence. From system accounts, online identities, credit card details and a whole host of other important information, 1Password has been designed to be a secure, encrypted repository for all your digital information. You can even store file attachments right inside the secure 1Password keychain.

1Password v3 also includes 1PasswordAnywhere, allowing you to access your information from any computer connected to the Internet with a modern browser.

If you're an iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad owner, 1Password is also available on these devices, allowing you to sync your important data wirelessly from your Mac on your local network.

The full show covers:
  • Introduction to 1Password
  • Installation
  • Importing Passwords
  • Using 1Password
  • Capturing Web Logins
  • Fill & Submit
  • Go & Fill
  • Go & Fill HUD
  • 1Click Bookmarks
  • New User Interface
  • Smart Search
  • Storing Accounts
  • Managing Identities
  • Strong Password Generator
  • Secure Notes
  • Managing Software Licenses
  • Attachments
  • Wallet
  • 1PasswordAnywhere & Dropbox Sync
  • 1PasswordAnywhere via USB Drive
  • Syncing Multiple Macs
  • Wrap Up & Special Offer
This week's show also includes a special ScreenCastsOnline 25% discount for new users of 1Password. Existing users can get upgrades at an already discounted price. Full details in this week's show - NB. The 25% discount offer expires on 30th June 2010

Bonus Episode - Things for iPad

Th_ipad copy
Not the usual show this week, I’ve been prevented from recording by a heavy cold. The full background to this weeks arrangements are on my blog - Plan B!

So in place of the usual show, I’m posting a special video I did for Things for iPad. I was going to send this out in addition to the usual show this week, hence the “Bonus Episode” moniker!

Things is my favourite to-do manager and the guys over at Cultured Code have done a fantastic job of re-coding it for the iPad.

The version sent out in the feed is in a different format than usual, to take account of the iPad format and rotation.

Special Version for iPad Owners
If you’re fortunate to actually have an iPad, there is a special experimental version that will run full screen on your iPad and will “rotate” depending on what is being shown. You can download it from here and sync it with your iPad. Either download the linked file on the link below to your Mac and sync with your iPad via iTunes. Or navigate to this page using an iPad application such as Goodreader or Downloader and download the file direct to your iPad. On starting the video, hold your iPad in landscape mode and switch on the rotation lock. Rotate the iPad when the relevant sections appear.

Download the special iPad version (This will play on a normal monitor, but you’ll strain your neck!)

Please feel free to send any feedback on this format to me at screencastsonline@gmail.com or comment on the ScreenCastsOnline forum here

SCO0244 - Essential iPad/iPhone Apps [Members Show]

ipad
Time to start thinking about what Apps to put on to the iPad!

This is the first in an occasional series of screencasts where I select my absolutely indispensable apps for the new iPad. No iPad? Well not to worry as these will all work just as well on the iPhone or iPod Touch. Actually, as the iPad was still unreleased at the time of recording, I can’t get access to native iPd apps so these are the iPhone versions, but should work just fine on the iPad!

As well as being a great device for consuming media, I think the iPad will be used as more and more as a basic computer where people don't need a full blown laptop and the iPhone is just too small. Email is a given, but we'll see more and more business type applications being developed for the iPad. Following on from last weeks show, if you're serious about productivity, TextExpander is a no brainer, enabling you to speed up text entry significantly with auto expanding snippets, invoked by just a few simple keyboard shortcuts.

If only TextExpander was available on the iPad? Well it is, in the form of TextExpander Touch!

TE_iPhone_icon_512.png 612×612 pixels
TextExpander Touch has been available for the iPhone and iPod Touch for a while. Although not identical to the Mac version, TextExpander Touch delivers the ability to create snippets and abbreviations in two modes. The first is via its compose window where you can draft notes or emails and then send directly to your Mail application or to any third party app via the clipboard. The second mode is just like TextExpander for the Mac.

All it needs is for the third party app to include TextExpander Touch support and you can access your snippets from within the application.

The show shows you how to use both modes effectively along with taking a look at the built in TextExpander Touch support in both Tweetie 2 and SimpleNote. This week's show also demonstrates how to share your snippet groups both ways between your Mac and your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad.

Tweetie2_512
Tweetie 2 is still my Twitter client for now and will be the first client to go on the iPad. With the integration with TextExpander Touch, it’s a must have but I’ve seen some screenshots of some other native iPad Twitter clients so this may be short lived. As I’ve already covered Tweetie 2 in depth (SCO0227), I’ve just included this to show the integration with TextExpander Touch. We may have to wait to see how Tweetie 2 survives until an iPad version is released.

simplenote_large.png 512×512 pixels
SimpleNote is also another application I’ve covered before (SCO0237) and will be heading straight to my iPad. Again, included in this show mainly to demonstrate TextExpander Touch, SimpleNote is a perfect, lightweight solution for synchronised note creation.

In detail, this week's show covers:
  • TextExpander Touch Overview
  • Snippet Groups
  • Using the Compose Window
  • Creating a New eMail
  • Replying to eMails
  • TextExpander Touch Integration
  • Setting up Integration in TextExpander Touch
  • Tweetie2 Configuration
  • Other Integrated Applications
  • Integration with SimpleNote
  • Sharing Snippet Groups
  • Setting up Preferences on the Mac
  • Getting Snippet Groups from the Mac
  • Sending Snippet Groups to the Mac

SCO0243 - TextExpander 3

textexpander 3
TextExpander is one of the must have Mac applications! Whilst simple in concept, once you start using TextExpander, you'll wonder have you ever lived without it.

At its core, TextExpander is an application that allows you to create and store "snippets" of information. These snippets can be plain text, formatted text, images, combinations of text and images, Applescripts even Shell script. Simply assign a few characters to create an abbreviation to your snippet, and when typed, the full snippet is expanded, saving you hours and hours of typing.

As well as standard snippets, TextExpander also allows to to access system information such as inserting the current date or time in any format you'd like, along with the ability to use the contents of your clipboard in a snippet.

New In TextExpander 3 is a new Fill-In snippet, allowing you to create snippets which prompt you with special fields to fill-in when expanded.

TextExpander 3 has been significantly updated both with enhancements to it's core functionality as well as some radical re-engineering of the application. It's now a full blown cocoa application rather than a System preferences pane option. In addition, the menu bar icon has a host of new features as well as lots of new keyboard shortcuts to both create and edit snippets.

Ever put off editing one of your snippets due to having to labouriously load up and find the snippet through System Preferences? Now, your last expanded snippet can be immediately be retrieved for editing with a simple keystroke.

Check out this week’s show for many more enhancements contained in TextExpander 3

The full show covers:
  • System Requirements & Install
  • Upgrading from previous versions
  • Basic TextExpander Usage
  • Fill-In Snippet Preview
  • What's New In TextExpander 3
  • New Dock Icon
  • Hiding the Dock Icon
  • Improved Menu Bar Icon
  • Searching Snippets
  • Setting HotKeys
  • Edit Last Expanded Snippet
  • Snippet Suggestions
  • Built In DropBox Sync
  • Capitalization Correction
  • All about Snippets
  • Creating Snippets
  • Creating a Date & Time Snippet
  • Creating an Email Sig
  • Using Fill-In Snippets
  • Other Snippet Elements
  • Understanding Delimiters
  • Snippet Groups
  • Wrap Up
This week’s free show has been sponsored by Smile on My Mac, the developers of TextExpander 3, and they have been kind enough to provide a 20% discount for purchases of the full or family pack versions of TextExpander 3. Full details of the offer are contained in this weeks show [Please note - the discount offer expires 30th April 2010]

SCO0241 - BusyCal [Members Show]

busycal
Another highly requested show this week, featuring BusyCal, the calendar application that iCal should be!

BusyCal is an application by BusyMac, developers of the very impressive BusySync product. After a couple of years work creating the hugely impressive syncing technology in BusySync, they've now decided to build on their success and create a replacement application for iCal. BusyCal is a fully featured calendar application intended to be used as a direct replacement for iCal.

iCal really hasn't had a lot done to it recently, in fact, many people thought iCal took a backwards step when the latest version was released in Leopard and Snow leopard.

BusyCal adds the functionality missing in iCal but in a seamless and very clever way. BusyCal uses the same underlying technologies that iCal does, OSX Sync Services. So all you iCal data is immediately available in BusyCal, you can even bounce between the two when you're trying it out. In addition, because BusyCal uses OSX Sync Services, synchronisation with your iPhone or other Macs is handled automatically using MobileMe.

The new UI in BusyCal is very similar to iCal so there's a very easy learning curve, an BusyCal takes advantage of some additional features including core animation, support for rich text throughout, multiple alarms, configurable snooze periods, Stick notes, journal entries and many more features.

With BusyCal also comes the ability to seamless synchronise your calendars across your LAN with other BusyCal users making it ideal for both small workgroups and families. Add in support for seamless synchronisation with Google Calendar and BusyCal really is iCal Pro!

The full show covers:
  • iCal Limitations
  • BusyCal Overview
  • Day View
  • Week View
  • Month View
  • List View
  • Holiday Calendars
  • Weather & Moon Phases
  • Event Types in BusyCal
  • Standard Events
  • Setting Alarms
  • Floating Info Panel
  • Banner Events
  • Sticky Notes
  • Journal Events
  • To Dos in BusyCal
  • MenuBar Icon
  • Sharing Calendars
  • Syncing with Google Calendars
  • Wrap up & Special Offer
This show includes a special discount code to receive 20% discount off BusyCal. The expiration date for the offer is 1st May 2010. See the show for more details.

SCO0237 - Mac Montage 12 [Members Show]

This week I cover two brand new utilities and revisit a third.

In detail. the show covers:
Quix Bookmarklet: The bookmarklet to rule them all! If, like me, you're building up a lot of bookmarklets in your bookmarks bar, this amazing utility may be the answer to all your problems. Basically, Quiz is a single bookmarklet containing over 100+ built in commands, allowing to access all sorts of functionality from your browser. These commands support a wide range of functions including Basic commands, Social commands, WordPress, SEO, Webmaster, Quix, Analytics, URL Shortening even App and Mac Integration commands, all built into the single Quix bookmarklet. It's like LaunchBar for your browser. Even better still, Quix is extensible and allows you to create your own Quix commands, removing the need for all those individual bookmarklets. The icing on the cake though is that Quix works on your iPhone or iPad. If you're a MobileMe user, Quix will synchronise with your mobile device and give you all the Quix functionality whilst you're out and about!

In the show I show you how to install Quix and invoke it with a keyboard shortcut in Safari, demonstrate some of the commands and show you how to create a custom quiz command based on the "add to Boxee" bookmarklet from last weeks show. In addition, I take a look at Quix on the iPhone and demonstrate its use.

Quix
Notational Velocity: We've already looked at NV in a previous show but one question I keep getting is how to synchronise NV across Macs. The latest version of NV has just been released with support for syncing your notes via Simplenote - a free web based service.

nv_small
Simplenote: A free web based service for creating and storing simple notes! With the built in integration with Notational Velocity, you now have a robust and powerful workflow. Simplenote also has a free iPhone app so it's now possible to sync you notes across Macs, to the web and to your iPhone or iPad - Amazing! This part of the show demonstrates setting up a Simplenote account and synchronising with NV. I also show you how it works on the iPhone.

SCO0234 - Mac Maintenance [Members]

iStock_000009831886XSmall
Luckily, most modern Macs need little or no regular maintenance. OSX is pretty much self maintaining, with automated scripts and an advanced file system, most people don't need to do anything to keep their Mac in tip top order.

Too good to be true?

Well not really, but human nature being what it is, it would be nice to understand what OSX is doing under the hood and perhaps keep an eye on how things are going. If the worst does happen and your Mac starts to slow down, or your favourite application starts to misbehave, what are the simple checks or processes you can undertake to try and fix things?

This week's show takes a look at both maintenance tasks and some simple troubleshooting tips to keep you Mac in tip top condition. This members only show covers:
  • Daily, Weekly & Monthly Maintenance Scripts
  • Checking Correct Operation of Scripts
  • Running Scripts Manually via Terminal
  • Third Party Maintenance Utilities
  • "Maintenance" & "Onyx"
  • Checking Permissions
  • Rebuilding Spotlight Caches
  • Speeding Up Mail
  • Monitoring S.M.A.R.T Drive Status
  • File System Check with Safe Boot & Safe Mode

SCO0230 - Mac Hints & Tips Montage - 11 [Extra Members]

Seeing as this show is going out over the Christmas period, I thought I'd give it a festive flavour with some hints and tips around getting the most out of your Mac for the holidays.

In detail. the show covers:
iTunes DJ : With the ever increasing numbers of iPhones and iPod touches in circulation, why not leverage the power of iTunes 9 and your wifi network to hand control of your Christmas or New year party playlist over to your guests! This section shows you how to set up iTunes DJ to allow guests to select, promote and demote songs from your iTunes playlist using the the free Apple Remote application directly from their hand held device.

itunes
Christmas Wallpaper & ScreenSaver: Why not spruce up your Mac with some gorgeous Christmas Wallpapers and a nice snowy screensaver. This section gives details of a superb resource of not just cool yule wallpapers, but also replacement icons and other such goodies. I show you how to install and configure some new wallpapers and screensavers with the addition of a fun time-lapse video of how one of the wallpapers was created.

SysPref
PhotoBooth SlideShows with QuickTime Pro: One of the most popular applications, not just at Christmas time but all year round, is PhotoBooth. The source of endless hours of fun and probably the reason for a lot of Mac sales, PhotoBoot allows you to create literally hundreds of fun photos from the built in iSight camera on the Mac. But what to do with all those photos? Why not create a video montage of all the photos? THis section shows you how to create a standard Quicktime movie of all your photos at whatever speed you like. In addition, I show you how to use Garageband to add an audio track to your movie.

QT
PhotoBooth SlideShows with iMovie 09: OK, so spending £20 to get the Pro version of Quicktime 7 may not be for you, so this section shows you how to do the same using iMovie 09 only better (and for free if you've already got iLife!) Using the relatively unknown feature of Beat Markers in iMovie 09, it's a breeze to cut still photos or even movie clips to the beat of your musical accompaniment. I use the PhotoBooth photos to demo but this is a fantastically powerful technique to use in your normally movie making, especially if you fancy your hand at becoming a music video producer!

SCO0228 - Readability, InstaPaper & Notational Velocity [Members]

Some tips this week to make your web browsing more pleasurable and effective, along with a great application for creating and retrieving text notes.

The first part of the show includes a couple of great bookmarklets which allow you to remove all distracting ads and extraneous content from web pages, so you can just focus on the content.

Readability
The first is Readability - a very smart bookmarklet that allows you to reformat a web page to your liking with a single click of a button. Also includes options to print or email the contents of the selected web page in a clean, easy to read format.

Autoscroll
The second is AutoScroll - once you have your cleanly formatted web page, why not let AutoScroll control the scrolling of the page automatically, allowing you to kick back and just read!

These first two bookmarklets are excellent if you have time to read long articles when you find them. More often than not, we don't have the time to read them there and then. That's when we need InstaPaper!

Instapaper
InstaPaper is a free web service that allows you to mark web pages to read later, either on or offline. Similar to Readability, it also strips out all the distractions and provides you with a clean copy of the information that matters - the content of the webpage itself. Add in the ability to download your unread web articles in printable, kindle or ePub format, along with the availability of both a free and pay for iPhone application for offline reading, InstaPaper is an indispensable tool.

nv
The last part of the show is all about Notational Velocity, a deceptively simple application for creating and searching textual notes. Built for mouse-less interaction and with its modeless operation, this application is screamingly fast at searching for existing notes and makes creating notes a breeze. All notes are stored in either a datafile (optional compression and encryption) or as standard text files for spotlight indexing. With full support for tagging and full text formatting, Notational Velocity is a great tool to keep on hand for all those little bits of information you need instant access to.

SCO0225 - LaunchBar 5 - Part 2

LB5
The second and final part of LaunchBar 5 (at least for now!) Following on from the hugely popular first tutorial published two weeks ago, this 45 minute extravaganza takes you through some of the new features of LaunchBar 5. LaunchBar 5 is one one of the most respected productivity applications for the Mac. At it’s simplest level, it’s an application launcher, but really, it’s so much more.

Objective Development, the developers of LaunchBar have been increasing the functionality with each release, adding not just cool but stunningly useful features. The bottom line is that the application very quickly becomes an indispensable tool once you've started using it for even just a few hours.

LaunchBar 5 creates an index of all the "stuff" on your Mac - Applications, files, folders, documents, preference panes, web bookmarks, Web history, your iTunes library, your address book, your iPhoto library and much more. It allows you to create abbreviations to search and access all this "stuff" without moving your hands from the keyboard, making it so much more efficient that picking up your mouse and clicking all over the screen. Add in some extra features such as the built in actions and my favourite - integration with webs services and web search templates, you'll wonder how you ever did without it

You really do need to watch the first part of the two part show, details of which can be found here - SCO0223 - LaunchBar 5 Part 1

In this week's show I cover:
  • Instant Send
  • Clipboard History & ClipMerge
  • iCal Integration
  • iTunes Integration
  • Searching in SpotLight
  • Using the Calculator
  • The LaunchBar Index
  • Creating a Search Template
As this week is a sponsored show, Objective Development, the developers of LaunchBar 5 have kindly made available a special discount coupon code, just for ScreenCastsOnline viewers. Full details are at the end of this weeks show.

SCO0223 - LaunchBar 5 - Part 1

LB5
At last! LaunchBar 5 is at full release status and I've been able to a show about it! Actually, not just one show, I've got so much to cover, I've had to split it across two shows (at least). In addition, I'm delighted that developers of LaunchBar 5 are supporting ScreenCastsOnline by sponsoring the free version of this weeks show.

It's no secret that LaunchBar has been one of my favourite applications, probably from since I first started on the Mac. At it's core, LaunchBar is an application launcher but to call it just an application launcher does it a disservice.

Although I've explored LaunchBar before in previous shows, for this show I thought I'd start from scratch, so you don't need to dig out the old shows.

In this week's show I cover:
  • Introduction & Installation
  • Initial Configuration
  • LaunchBar 5 Basics
  • Launching Applications
  • Instant Open
  • Opening Recent Documents
  • Using Address Book Data in LB5
  • Skype Integration
  • Working with Files in LB5
  • Accessing Websites via LB5
  • Using Web Search Templates
  • Searching and Accessing Bookmarks & Web History
As this week is a sponsored show, Objective Development, the developers of LaunchBar 5 have kindly made available a special discount coupon code, just for ScreenCastsOnline viewers. Full details are at the end of this weeks show.

The next free show will take a look at some of the other new features of LaunchBar 5

SCO0222 - Mac Hints & Tips Montage - 10 [Extra Members]

This week it's a mixture of a few hacks and mods, a great free Safari plugin in and a "behind the scenes" glimpse of how we handle email here at ScreenCastsOnline.

In detail. the show covers:
Copying and Pasting Email Addresses : Snow Leopard has changed the default behaviour so I point to a terminal command that set things back the way they should be!

Links: MacDaddyWorld
mail
Modifying Grid View in iTunes 9: Lots of complaints about the white background on the Grid view in the latest version of iTunes. How to reset it to a darker colour. Update - Would you believe that Apple brought out 9.0.2 the night before this show was released and that they fixed the problem with a preference option! Luckily, I had chance to make the change to the show!

itunes
Hidden Keyboard Shortcuts: Some pretty neat keyboard shortcuts to allow you to control your audio plus access some system preference panes directly

ClickTo Flash: At last, a way to tame the beast that is Flash! A free Safari plugin that allows you to control what Flash content is displayed as you browse the interwebs. Cut down the distractions, stop your CPU from revving up and keep the heat down on your laptop. This great plugin also allows you control over YouTube, letting you default to H.264 formatted content and even download YouTube videos to your Mac in H.264 format for direct use in iTunes.

Email Tools and Processes :This section covers how I've adapted my email workflow to allow for the sharing of the ScreenCastsOnline mailbox with Mrs Don, and demonstrates how I pass emails on for further processing using a combination of automated and manual rules processing. I also include a rather smart utility from eCamm which allows you to have multiple badges on your email dock icon to keep track of the contents of multiple mailboxes - Dockstar. There's even a 35% discount coupon included!

SCO0221 - Things for iPhone

things
The final part of Things, this time, Things for iPhone and iPod touch, the outstanding task management application from Cultured Code.

In previous shows I've taken a look at Things for the Mac but in this weeks show, I take a closer look at the mobile version of the application, allowing you to take your tasks and to-dos with you wherever you go, as well as create and manage your tasks on the move.

Although Things for the iPhone has almost all the features of Things for the Mac, and will fully synchronise with its Mac counterpart, it's a fully featured task management application in its own right, capable of running completely independently.

In this weeks show, I explore the features of the application and the mobile interface. I also take a look at synchronising Things for iPhone with Things for Mac.

SCO0219 - Things - Part 2

things
Part two of Things - the multi award winning task management application from Cultured Code

This week I take a look at some of the slightly more advanced features of Things, allowing you to take full advantage of its power in your workflow. The show covers:
  • Using Projects in Things
  • Making Projects Inactive & Using as Project Templates
  • Delegating & Distributing To Dos
  • Synchronisation with iCal
  • Using Things on Multiple Macs via DRopBox
  • Integration with LaunchBar
The free version of this week's show is sponsored by Cultured Code, the developers of Things

Update: In the wrap up, I mention that the iPhone application doesn't support Areas of Responsibility. To clarify, it actually does support syncing Areas from the Mac version, it just doesn't (currently) support the creation of them from the iPhone.

SCO0217 - Things - Part 1

things
This week, the show features the multi award winning task management application from Cultured Code - Things

I've had lots of requests to cover Things for a while now, but I've always felt it needed a few tweaks on the integration side, especially due to my personal reliance on using both a task management application along with the standard Apple email application. Thankfully, with the release of Things 1.2, the wait was over, as not only was superb email integration delivered but some other unexpected features as well!.

As there is so much to cover, I've split the Things tutorial into two parts, the second part to be published in two weeks time.

This week, it's part one and I cover:
  • Creating To Do Items
  • Using Tags
  • Creating Hierarchical Tags
  • Updating Notes using Drag & Drop
  • Quick Entry Panel & AutoFill
  • Assigning Due Dates and Repeating To Dos
  • Organising To Do Items using Lists
  • Using the Today List
  • Using the Scheduled List
  • Using the Someday List
  • Creating and managing Projects
  • Areas of Responsibilities
The free version of this week's show is sponsored by Cultured Code, the developers of Things

SCO0212 - Mac Hints & Tips Montage - 09 [Extra Members]

Time for another Mac Montage!

Rather than focus on a single topic or software application, I include a number of different hints and tips, all intended to help you get the most out of your Mac!

Removing Duplicate Photos from iPhoto : Following on from last week, as promised, I take a look at a relatively inexpensive utility that allows you to purge your iPhoto library of duplicate photos. I explore the most effective methods of using Duplicate Annihilator and importantly, cover how to safeguard against finding false duplicates, along with some suggestions for double checking your results.

Links: Duplicate Annihalator (25% off using CPN7756165310)
iPhoto09
QuickLook Plugins: Introduced in Leopard, QuickLook allows you to see the contents of all sorts of files directly from the Finder, just by tapping the space bar. Apple have made the QuickLook architecture extensible allowing third party developers to create custom QuickLook plugins. In this section, I take a look at a great web resource for Quicklook Plugins, along with how to install and configure them. I also cover the installation of three free sample Quicklook plugins - BetterZIP, Photoshop Brushes and Suspicious Packages.

Links: QuickLook Plugins Website

The Zoom Button in OS X: The source of frustration for many Mac users especially switchers from Windows. What on earth does the "Zoom Button" actually do? Why doesn't it maximize the screen when that's all that I want it to do! The reasons behind the usual behaviour of the Zoom button are explained in this section along with a handy little tip on how to resize the iTunes window without it turning into a mini player - don't you hate it when that happens! In addition, if you really hate the standard behaviour of the Zoom button, I show you how to install a great free utility that changes the the default behaviour of the Zoom button to a "Windows like" maximise button.

Security “On the road”: In this fourth and final section, I take a look at some of the considerations you need to bare in mind when traveling with your laptop. I look at some easy tips on making your laptop more secure, tips which can also be applied to desktop machines too. You don't have to follow all the suggestions but the section covers most of the basics to make your machine more secure when travelling.

SCO0211 - Managing Multiple Macs - Part 3

twomacs
The third and final part of the mini series on "Managing Multiple Macs" (which may be continued at a later date!)

This week, I take at look at how I manage organising and moving my digital images and videos between my laptop and desktop Mac.

As well as the multitude of applications available to use to work on our digital assets, we are faced with an ever expanding number of gadgets and gizmos that enable us to create images and video too. So as well as how to move your digital images and video around, I also take a look at "Cameras" - a simple yet ingenious preference pane application that allows you to configure exactly what happens when you plug your digital devices into your Mac, albeit open iPhoto, Aperture, iMovie, automatically download or even, just do nothing at all.

I also take a look at using external hard drives as an option to swap iPhoto libraries between machines, as well as a third party application called "iPhoto Library Manager". This brilliant application allows you to copy images between separate iPhoto libraries using simple drag and drop, as well as allowing you to merge complete iPhoto libraries.

To finish off, there's even a short section on moving Aperture projects between machines.

SCO0210 - Managing Multiple Macs - Part 2 [Members Show]

twomacs
Time to look at my particular solution for managing multiple iTunes libraries across many Macs. My own issue was all to do with syncing my podcasts whilst out on the road. Yes, you can download individual podcasts wirelessly to your iPhone or iPod touch, but I'd much rather have the podcasts pushed to my local device via subscriptions.

So the only option was to start syncing my iPhone with my laptop rather than my desktop Mac. That way, I could always have up to the date podcasts ready to sync no matter where I was. The only problem then is how to manage multiple iTunes libraries.

itunes
What if I ripped some music on my laptop, how to get that across to the desktop? What if I bought some tunes from Amazon on my desktop but I wanted them on my iPhone? What about all my playcounts and ratings, how to synchronise them between multiple machines.

Well in this show, I demonstrate how to accomplish all this and more using a third party application called SuperSync.

As an added bonus, you can also use Supersync to set up a web server to access all your music via a web browser or your iPhone either locally or via the Internet. Know you will have to set up "Port Forwarding" on your local network to get this to work, but I also demonstrate how to set that up in the show too!

SCO0209 - Managing Multiple Macs - Part 1

twomacs
One of the problems that viewers have with ScreenCastsOnline is that because I cover so much stuff, it's sometimes difficult to either know where to start, or how to gather all the information together under a single subject. This week's show is an experiment to address this by pulling together mainly information I've published before, with some new information thrown into the mix.

The genesis of the show is that I've received many requests on "How to effectively manage multiple Macs" and whilst preparing for the show, I realised that many of the areas have already been addressed, but in separate shows.

So this week, I've tried to pull all the information together in a two part episode, discussing how I manage my multiple Mac setup and the reasons why I use the tools and techniques that I do. The show is heavily littered with references to previous shows, so if you want to go back and receive more in depth information on any of the tools and techniques, you can!

In this weeks show, I cover:
  • Synchronising settings with MobileMe
  • Using iDisk
  • MobileMe iDisk Application
  • Back To My Mac
  • Managing EMail
  • Sharing Documents using DropBox
  • Sharing information using EverNote
  • Replicating Files & Folders using ChronoSync
Next week, I'll finish off by examining various strategies for managing multiple iPhoto, Aperture and iTunes libraries, along with some workflow suggestions to keep everything in sync.

SCO0207 - Mac OS X Utilities #2

Mac OS X v10.5.6 Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.)
This week, the second part of the exploration of the Mac OS X Utilities folder, and all the goodies contained within it!

Hidden away within the Mac OS X Applications folder is a folder called "Utilities", installed as part of a standard 10.5 installation. In this folder are 24 free utilities covering many different aspects of using your Mac. Last week, I covered the first 12 utilities, so this week, it's the final 12.

This second part covers:
  • Grapher
  • Java Preferences
  • Keychain Access
  • Migration Assistant
  • Network Utility
  • ODBC Administrator
  • Podcast Capture
  • RAID Utility
  • Remote Install Mac OS X
  • System Profiler
  • Terminal
  • VoiceOver Utility
Now some of the utilities I've covered before, and some, both you and I will never use. Where I have covered them before, I've included references to the other shows, and where the utilities are fairly obscure, at least you'll learn what they are all about and their intended usage!

SCO0206 - Mac OS X Utilities #1 [Members Show]

Mac OS X v10.5.6 Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.)
This week, a whole folder of utilities! Yes, and all free!

Following on from a request for suggestions for topics for the Mac Montage shows, Steve Housley, a regular ScreenCastsOnline viewer, came up with a brilliant idea.

"How about starting at the top of the Utilities folder?"

Brilliant!

Hidden away within the Mac OS X Applications folder is a folder called "Utilities", installed as part of a standard 10.5 installation. In this folder are 24 free utilities covering many different aspects of using your Mac. So this week, I'll be covering the first 12 utilities, with the final 12 in next weeks show.

This first part covers:
  • Activity Monitor
  • Bluetooth File Exchange
  • Boot Camp Assistant
  • ColorSync Utility
  • Console
  • DigitalColor Meter
  • Directory Utility
  • Directory
  • Disk Utility
  • Grab
Now some of the utilities I've covered before, and some, both you and I will never use. Where I have covered them before, I've included references to the other shows, and where the utilities are fairly obscure, at least you'll learn what they are all about and their intended usage!

SCO0205 - Bento 2 & Bento for iPhone

bento icon
It's been out a while, but I finally decided to do an update show all about the new features in Bento 2. It's really an application that should have been included as part of iWork being an easy to use, yet sophisticated database application.

Bento 2 has been updated with many new features but more importantly, they've addressed some of the failings of the first version especially in the area of viewing your data, designing forms, importing and export and printing. They've even made it easier to use for people more used to manipulating data in spreadsheets with the incorporation of some new "spreadsheet like" features.

SCO0204-bento2iphone
The event that that finally twisted my arm to create this update show, was the launch of the new Bento application for the iPhone/iPod touch. This new application is dual purpose in that it allows you to create and organise Bento libraries directly on your iPhone or iPod Touch as a standalone application, as well as allowing you to synchronise with the Bento libraries on your Mac.

This full free show covers:
  • Bento User Interface Changes
  • Working with Data
  • Spreadsheet Type Controls
  • Message List Fields
  • Templates and Printing
  • Bento on the iPhone
  • Synchronising with the Mac
This weeks show is an update show, intended to bring you up to speed with all the new features of Bento 2 and the new iPhone application. If you're new to Bento, I'd strongly suggest that you check out the previous Bento shows first to get a full understanding of the basic principles and concepts of using Bento.

SCO0202 - Mac Hints & Tips Montage - 08 [Extra Members]

Time for yet another Mac Montage this week!

Rather than focus on a single topic or software application, I include a number of different hints and tips, all intended to help you get the most out of your Mac! A fairly mixed bag included this week, with some simple and some more complex hints and tips.

Photo Location Information Updates: Apple have introduced some handy new features to help you assign location information from photos taken with the iPhone across to photos taken with a normal "Non-GPS" enabled camera. This tip shows you what is involved and also takes a look at a simpler way to move a locations pin to provide more accurate placement on your iPhoto maps.!

iPhoto09
Spurious Zooming on MacBooks: Whilst I love the multi-touch gestures on the new unibody MacBooks, there is one that drives me to distraction, and that's zooming in Safari and Mail. This only seems to affect those of us used to the older MacBooks with the single button, where we used one hand for clicking the button and the other for moving the mouse. It's really hard to relearn not to use button finger and on the new MacBooks, this leads to inadvertent zooming in Safari and Mail. Very annoying. Well as Apple don't provide a way to turn this off, one enterprising coder decided to create an InputManager to disable this function. This tip shows you how to install this InputManager and retain your sanity!

Links: Original Instructions
macbookpro_small
Creating Symbolic Links with Automator: I've looked at this technique before of using DropBox to syncronise application data using symbolic links. One of my favourite applications has now been enabled to use this technique, and that's TextExpander. Rather than show you the typicalway of implementing this, I stumbled upon some third party Automator actions that remove the need for typing long commands into terminal to set this up.

Links: Automator Actions Manual Instructions
textexpander_small
Monitoring Disk Usage: This segment features two of my favourite utilities for seeing just where all that precious disk space has gone - GrandPerspective and OmniDiskSweeper. Both utilities do the same job of showing you which files and folders are taking up the most space on your drive, but each has a different approach on how the data is presented. I take you through both utilities and describe how I use each one.

SCO0192 - Mac Hints & Tips Montage - 07 [Extra Members]

200903-March
Time for another Mac Montage this week!

Mac Montage shows ar eturning out to be one of the most popluar types of ScreenCastsOnline shows. Rather than focus on a single topic or software application, I included a number of different hints and tips, all intended to help you get the most out of your Mac! A fairly mixed bag included this week, with some simple and some more complex hints and tips.

Renaming Files In situ : You know when you’ve just saved a file and realise that you should have actually called it something else? Yes you can File Save As or rename the file in the Finder once you’ve saved it, but this little tip is so much simpler!

app
Accessing Bento via Multiple Machines: If you’ve more than a single machine, it can be quite frustrating to have your Bento database accessible via one machine and not another. This hint shows you how you can use DropBox to synchronise your Bento database across multiple machines. There are some caveats such as this isn’t supported by Filemaker and you can’t use Bento as a multi-user database, but it’s a neat way of doing it and could be useful for other applications, not just Bento.

Links: Bento, DropBox, BentoUsers website
bento logo
Configuring Spelling in OSX: Although OSX supports many different spelling using many different languages, it’s not always that easy to understand how? It’s OK if you’re one of the people that thinks color is the correct spelling, but this can be a minor irritation to some people!

This section shows you how to change the default language settings for Finder and Menus, as well as how to switch on the various spelling dictionaries in your applications.

alphabet
Clearing out iPod and iPhone Files: Two tips in this hint to help you reclaim some of your disk space. Whenever you update the firmware on your iPod or iPhone, OSX keeps a copy. After a few upgrades this can use up a fair slice of your disk space.
In addition, iPod touch and iPhone users, did you know that each time you install or upgrade a mobile application, iTunes keeps all the old unneeded copies. They may be small, but it soon adds up! This hint shows you how to clear them out and get some disk space back.

itunes
16 Cores in Action: A couple of viewers have asked to see how I utilise the two Mac Pros to encode my videos using Compressor. Well small segment shows you just that. See the power of 16 cores roaring into action!

Well you did ask!

SCO0189 - Archiving Mail with MailSteward

feb2009
If you're like me, you'll have a significant number of emails gathered over the years from multiple email accounts, usually from multiple service providers. You'll have some on your local machine, some in the cloud, some languishing on CD or DVD backups of machines past, well, you get the picture!

Are you using an IMAP account with thousands of emails needing to be synchronised every time you access that account on another machine? Is your email client struggling with the number of emails in your archived mailboxes?

Wouldn't it be great to collect all these emails into a separate application, designed to archive your email, and make search and retrieval a breeze.

Perhaps you're a big Gmail or MobileMe email user but feel slightly nervous about having all your important and sensitive emails held in the cloud? Wouldn't it be nice to gather all these emails up, place them in an optimised database locally and then delete all those copies hanging around in the cloud.

What about backups? Do you know the current state of your email backups? Can you even access you old backups or are your old emails locked in some proprietary email format?

Well the answer to all these issues and more is provided by the subject of this weeks show and that's MailSteward

mailsteward logo
MailSteward is a Mac application that allows you to archive all your email and email attachments into an optimised relational database, giving you full control of how you store, search and retrieve your email. Available in three versions, MailSteward, MailSteward Lite and MailSteward Pro, this unique application allows you to archive your emails into a SQLite (MailSteward & MailSteward Lite) database or for power users with more than 100, 000 emails to archive, into a MYSQL database (MailSteward Pro). Once safely archived in the database, MailSteward gives you incredibly powerful search tools to easily find any emails or attachments in your personal database. Once you've found your information, MaiSteward allows you to print, save or export in many different ways including text, csv and tab delimited files, PDFS, email lists, MailSteward databases, SQL databases, mbox format and more. In addition, you can reply and forward to emails held within your archive database with just the click of a button.

Organise and search your emails using tags, including support for emails previoulsy tagged with MailTags by Indev software.

This show takes a look at all the major features of MailSteward including:
  • MailSteward Introduction
  • Preparing For Email Archiving
  • MailSteward Settings
  • Running an Archive Process
  • Using MailSteward
  • Printing, Saving & Exporting
  • Using Tags
  • Searching in MailSteward
As this weeks show has been sponsored by MailSteward, they have kindly provided a special 20% discount coupon code for ScreenCastsOnline viewers for all versions of MailSteward. The code is SC156 and runs up to the 10th April 2009.

SCO0184 - Project: How I Create the SCO DVDs [Extra! Members Only]

2009Jan

Something different this week in that I've created another tutorial based on a project rather than a single application.
2008 DVD Label - small2

It's a peek behind the scenes to see how I create the ScreenCastsOnline DVD Archives. These are data DVDs I create each year as a service for ScreenCastsOnline Extra! members. Each DVD contains all the HD versions of the shows for the previous year, allowing members to clear down iTunes and keep a copy of the shows for future reference.

rw
Rather than just copy all the Quicktime movies over to the DVD (well that wouldn't be much of a show would it!), each DVD archive has a mini version of the main ScreenCastsOnline website installed right on the DVD. The mini website is based on the full version of the site complete with show notes and a direct link to each HD version of the show available on the DVD.

This weeks show takes you through how I use Rapidweaver to create the main ScreenCastsOnline website and then the multi-stage process to create the mini website from the very same RapidWeaver project.

Along the way, I also touch on:

SCO0182 - Mac Hints & Tips Montage - 05 [Extra! members only]

2009Jan
Unusually, this is the second Extra members only show in a row due to the fact that we had two free shows out of sequence last year!

Even more unusually, this is the second Mac Montage show in a row! This week I've recorded a show in advance as it's Macworld week and there is no way I could record a normal show whilst at Macworld, so I thought I'd do one in advance for you.

Four new hints and tips in this weeks show:

SpaceSuit: It's always struck me as strange that Apple never built this functionality into Spaces itself - that being the ability to use separate wallpapers or images for each space you have setup. So this free utility fills the gap and allows you to do just that, making spaces seem just more useable.

Links: SpaceSuit
SpaceSuit
Dock Spaces: Another free utility, but this time enhancing the functionality of the Dock. It has two modes, either giving you multiple configurable docks as well as Spaces integration. No you can have a different dock for each Space in Leopard. Combine this with SpaceSuit and suddenly Spaces takes on a whole new level of functionality.

Links: Dock Spaces
Downloads
Full Keyboard Access: Built right into OS X, Full Keyboard Access allows you to control all aspects of the OS X interface just by using the keyboard. Want to activate a different button on a dialog box than the default? Just TAB and Space and you're done - No mousing required.
System Preferences
Creating an EMail Signature using TextExpander: Another request - How do I create my email sig to include a graphic and embedded links. All is revealed and TextExpander is the answer!

SCO0181 - Mac Hints & Tips Montage - 04 [Extra! members only]

2009Jan
As promised, a ScreenCastsOnline Extra! members only show this week (and next!) and it's a Mac Montage show.

This week I cover three separate hints and tips to get the most out of your Mac:

Secrets: A very smart preference pane that gives you access to a database of hidden settings for both OSX and many popular OSX Applications. No need to chant incantations or type long and unwieldy commands in terminal, Secrets gives you a simple GUI to access the settings and also buttons to restart Applications and services. I examine just a fraction of the hidden settings available including resetting and changing the appearance of the Dock, plus an exceptionally handy tip for iTunes.

Links: Secrets Website
System Preferences
Fiwi: Ever wished that Finder had two panes by default. Ever so handy when comparing folder contents or dragging and dropping. Well Fiwi is a simple utility that allows you to fire up two finder windows with one click and have them align and resize next to each other automatically, either in row or column configuration. You can even set a specific window configuration if you'd like. Very handy!

Untitled
Smart Playlists: Still using the Podcast section in iTunes to sync and manage your podcasts on your iPod or iPhone? In this section, I show you how I manage my podcasts using smart playlists to create sorted playlists which manage themselves.

SCO0179 - Mac Switcher & MacUpdate Holiday Bundles

dec2008
A public service announcement this week! OK, perhaps not, but it sure feels like it. I've abandoned my schedule this week to bring you details of two outstanding Mac bundles that could save you a ton of cash.

To be honest though, it's not really the savings but more the fact that the bundles contain some of the finest Mac software available and I really don't want you to miss out on the opportunity of buying these applications at amazing prices. But for one of the bundles, you'll need to move very fast as it finishes on the 18th December 2008. To get the message out to the widest audience, this weeks show is not the scheduled members only show, so I'll be doing a couple of members shows in sequence in a couple of weeks.

Mac Switcher Bundle

macswitcher
The first bundle is the Mac Switcher Bundle which contains ScreenCastsOnline favourites 1Password, TextExpander and Witch.

For full disclosure I should point out that I've also contributed 10 ScreenCastsOnline videos from the archive, all aimed at the new mac switcher.

As I've covered both 1Password and TextExpander in previous episodes I've mentioned them in passing, but as Witch has not been covered before I've done a full section on Witch. Witch is a super window switcher for the Mac. Why do we need a window switcher when we already have Expose? Well, Witch allows you to switch between open and minimised windows of all running applications via the keyboard.

Four Safari windows open? Switch seamlessly between them with a few simple keystokes.

Witch displays an on-screen panel allowing you to see all open or minimised windows and navigate between them using the keyboard or even the scrollwheel on you mouse.

Check out the Mac Switcher Bundle here for links to all the applications. The bundle is available util 31st January 2008

MacUpdate Holiday Bundle

MacUpdate Promo Holiday Bundle - Make 2009 the best year ever for you and your Mac.
The second bundle is one you need to move fast on if you want to get it!

Containing applications we've covered before, new applications and updated applications, the MacUpdate Holiday Bundle is 10 applications at a killer price! I think it's fair to say that several of the applications are worth the price of the bundle individually if not more.

The bundle comprises the full versions of Rapidweaver, Drive Genius 2, Default Folder X, KeyCue, VirusBarrier 5, Little Snitch, WhatSize, MacPilot, iVolume and MacGourmet Deluxe.

The show gives a brief explanation of each application drilling into more detail for Drive Genius 2, Default Folder X, KeyCue, VirusBarrier 5, Little Snitch and WhatSize. Rapidweaver 4 will be explored in a full show in the new year so it may be worth snagging your copy now!

The MacUpdate Holiday Bundle segment of the show has not been sponsored or endorsed by any of the software vendors or MacUpdate but you can show your support for ScreenCastsOnline by using the special ScreenCastsOnline affiliate link - ScreenCastsOnline.com/mupromo

SCO0176 - Organise Your Email - Mail Act-On v2

nov2008
Slight change of plan this week - Following the recent MailTags episode [SCO0174] I mentioned the availability of a new version of Mail Act-On. As the original show was recorded in advance of my trip on MacMania8, I didn't have time to check on the new version of Mail Act-On until after the first show was published. As soon as I did try it however, it became immediately obvious that I really needed to cover Mail Act-On in a new show as the package had been dramatically enhanced and was the perfect partner for MailTags.
actOnIcon

So this week I've put together a tutorial all about Mail Act-On v2

Mail Act-On allows you to assign keystrokes that allow you to tag and move your emails, all from the keyboard, dramatically reducing the amount of time it takes to manage and organise your mail.

In this weeks show I cover:
  • Introduction to Mail Act-On
  • Using the Pop Up menu
  • Mail Act-On Rules
  • Setting up Mail Act-On Keystroke Rules
  • Setting up Mail Act-On OutBox Rules
  • Mail Act-On Preferences
I also include a special bonus section for any OmniFocus users who wish to use the MailTags integration with OmniFocus to move emails seamlessly into OmniFocus pre-propulated with Project and Due Date information. There will be full OmniFocus show in the next month or so.

You can find out more about Mail Act-On by visiting the Mail Act-On website or take advantage of the 10% discount (please note - only available up to December 31st 2008) by visiting the special webstore for ScreenCastsOnline viewers.

Actually, the title of this weeks show is a little misleading! Yes, the utilities featured in this weeks show will make using a large screen monitor easier, but they also will assist you on smaller monitors and even laptops. This show covers various utilities that can help you with managing how you move your cursor and your windows on screen. The utilities help you speed up your workflow by giving you some extra control over and above how OSX is designed to work delivering a much more efficient way of working (especially if you do use a large monitor).

For viewers of the free feed, I've included a full segment from the Extra! members only show as a taster but also to see if we can boost the sales of this particular app, for reasons that will become apparent as you watch the clip.

In this weeks full Extra! members only show I cover:
My Mouse Recommendations - A quick look at my Mice of choice - The Logitech MX Revolution Mouse and the VX Nano Mouse. I also give you a demonstration of the benefits of the dual function scroll and flywheel mechanism.

Links: Logitech MX Revolution Wireless Laser Mouse
Logitech VX Nano Cordless Laser Mouse for Notebooks
Logitech
SteerMouse - A fully featured advanced driver for USB and Bluetooth mouse. SteerMouse allows to to fully program a wide variety of Mice and I show you my most favourite feature - a way to make your mouse pointer zoom across the screen automatically and land dead center on the default button of dialog boxes - no wrist movement required!

Link: SteerMouse Website
SteerMouse TOP
DejaMenu - A real boon for large screen or multiple monitor setups. You know how OSX arranges the Application menu bar across the top of the primary display? Well it can be a real pain constantly moving the mouse pointer from the left, right or bottom of the screen all the way to the top. And when your application window is on a separate monitor from the application menu bar - grrrr! Well DejaMenu is a free utility that comes to the rescue by allowing you to assign a key combination to pop up the application menu right under your mouse pointer - no matter where it's located on the screen. In the show I also show you how easy it is to remap the DejaMenu key combo to a single mouse button using SteerMouse.

Link: DejaMenu Website
DejaMenu 1.2.2 for MacOS X
MercuryMover - (This full segment is included in this weeks sampler version of the show and available for free) Whilst all these tips assist you using your mouse, true power users know that the keyboard is the way to go to speed up your workflow. On any Mac, constantly moving and resizing windows using the mouse can be a real time drain. The constant moving from keyboard to mouse and back again can add seconds to your workflow that over the space of a day, a week and a year, can waste an extraordinary amount of time.

So wouldn't it be great to be able to resize and move windows directly from the keyboard with a couple of simple keystrokes?

Well you can using MercuryMover! This simple but effective application allows your to move and resize windows by 1 pixel, 10 pixels or 100 pixels at a time and will also allow you to move or resize to the edge of the screen. You can even center or maximise your selected window with a single keypress. As well as these built in shortcuts, MercuryMover also allows you to save custom keyboard shortcuts that will allow you to save the size, position or both for any window on screen. Do you always want Safari to be the same size and position when you use it? Well you can reapply a saved setting via MercuryMover and resize and repostition the window everytime with pixel point accuracy.

MercuryMover is currently available at a reduced price but ScreenCastsOnline viewers can get an additional 10% off by visiting a special store page. With each copy of MercuryMover sold, $2 of the purchase price will be donated to the National Cancer Coalition

nov2008
If you're like me, email is an essential part of my day to day activity and I really need to keep on top of the vast volume of email that flows in every day from friends, colleagues and business associates.

If you're an organised person, you may already have a system in place that handles your email effectively along with all the other sources of information that we need to manage each day. SCO0171 - Dropbox [Extra! Members Ony]

oct2008
Amazing!
dropboxicon
Yes, that's the word I'd use to describe this brand new service which allows you to store, sync and share your files and photos. The new service is called "Dropbox" and is fully cross platform with clients for the Mac, Windows and Linux. Add in a fully featured web interface plus an iPhone optimised web site, and your files and data can be seamlessly synced across all your computers and accessible from any machine with an internet connection. In some respects, Dropbox looks to be the service we were all hoping iDisk was going to be when re-launched as part of MobileMe.

The free version of Dropbox gives you a whopping 2GB of free storage space, but don't make the mistake of treating this as just another online storage system. Dropbox has all sorts of extra features allowing you to share your files and photos easily via publicly addressable URLs, full file versioning and easy recovery, recovery of deleted files, special online photo galleries and much more. This weeks ScreenCastsOnline Extra! members show demonstrates all these features and more. The full show covers:
  • Intro & Setup
  • Using Dropbox
  • Using the Dropbox folder
  • Sharing Files From Your Public Folder
  • Dropbox Web Interface
  • File Versioning and Restoring
  • Syncronising & Sharing
  • Syncronising Between Macs
  • Sharing Dropbox Folders
  • Recovering Deleted Files
  • Using Photos and Dropbox
1password
In addition, I also demonstrate how 1Password users can migrate from MobileMe syncing of their 1Password data to use the brand new Agile Keychain facility within 1Password, and use Dropbox to synchronise instead. This allows for a more feature rich, efficient and more robust syncing solution than using MobileMe.

SCO0170 - PDFPen v4 Update

oct2008
This
PDFPen
week is the final in the short series of product updates (at least for a month or two!) and I take a look at the newly launched version of PDFPen - PDFPen v4.

As well as PDFPen, I also take a look at a side benefit of some of the new features of PDF Pen that will help Evernote users in enabling PDF files to be fully searchable in Evernote.

As we're talking about PDFs, I also take a look at a free utility that allows you to take a standard full sized PDF and convert it automatically into a printable A5 booklet - very cool!

PDFPen has always been a great low cost PDF editor with some features previously only found in very expensive, top end editing applications. With the advent of PDFPen 4, there are even more features and the show will take a look at:
  • Newly revised User Interface
  • New Thumbnail view in the sidebar
  • Optical Character Recognition (OCR) - This is a big one, enabling you to take your scanned, uneditable and unsearchable PDFs and convert them automatically to have full searchable and editable text.
  • New Highlighting & Annotation Features
  • New Print options for Comments and Notes
  • New TIFF Output
The show also covers:
  • Using PDFPen to convert your PDFs for Evernote
  • Installing and using Create Booklet 1.0.1

SCO0166 - Circus Ponies NoteBook v3.0

final_app_256
This week, the show takes a sneaky peak at an application we've previously covered on ScreenCastsOnline, but which is just about to be re-launched with some terrific new features.

Update: Circus Ponies Notebook V3.0 is now available from the Circus Ponies website

Circus Ponies NoteBook is a fully featured information manager which uses the metaphor of a familiar paper notebook interface complete with pages, tabs, sections and sub sections and now sticky notes and flags. It allows you to store text, outlines, to-dos, images, sketches, web clippings, email clippings, movies, PDFs or other documents on the pages of the notebook itself and then organise them with keywords, highlighting and even voice annotation.

Once you've got your information stored, NoteBook makes it really easy to search all of your information. A comprehensive indexing system is built right into NoteBook giving you instant access to all the information multiple index pages, just like the index in a book. In addition, all of a Notebooks unencrypted text is now also accessible via OSX spotlight searches.

As well as all this functionality, Circus Ponies NoteBook allows you to share your information easily and simply with other users and can even publish your notebooks to the web as fully functional websites directly to MobileMe or to any other Web Hosting Provider.

It's been quite a while since we covered v2.1 of Notebook, way back in April 2007 so I'll make no apologies for covering some old ground rather than just focussing on the new elements. The application has taken the notebook metaphor to a completely new level with this release and includes some stunning new features which we'll cover as we move through the tutorial.

Wherever possible, I've indicate new features by displaying this icon
newforv3
in the bottom right corner of the screen and added in additional chapter markers for easy navigation. Chapter markers are included in all Extra member versions of the shows but as this show has been sponsored by Circus Ponies, I've left them in the free version so you can try them out.

This weeks show covers:
  • Introduction to NoteBook
  • New - Info Flags
  • New - Inspector Changes
  • New - Toolbar Changes
  • New - Detachable Pages
  • Adding Pages and Media
  • Adding media files to NoteBook
  • New - Support for Sketching & Writing
  • New - Support for Pen Devices
  • New - Diagramming & Sticky Notes
  • New - Sticky Notes
  • Outlining and Annotation
  • New - Date Popup
  • Web and Email Clippings
  • Multidex Indexing
  • Sharing your NoteBook

SCO0164 - Twitter Desktop Clients

twitterlogo
As promised, this weeks show follows on from last week, and covers some of the top Twitter clients available for the Mac (and Windows in two cases)

The Twitter web interface is functional but could be better. Luckily, and some would say one of the catalysts of Twitters success, the Twitter developers have released a Twitter API or Application Programming Interface, that allows third party developers to create external clients for Twitter for the Desktop and Mobile devices. In this weeks show I cover three of the top Twitter Desktop clients:

twit
Twitterrific - A native Mac application that is the application of choice for many, many Mac users. A combination of small desktop footprint, support for keyboard shortcuts and access to many of OSX's inbuilt functions such as spell checker, makes this application ideally suited to the Mac environment. Link

twhirl
Twhirl - The first of two applications built on Adobes AIR (Adobe Integrated Runtime) - a cross-platform runtime environment for building rich Internet applications using Adobe Flash, Adobe Flex, HTML, or Ajax, that can be deployed as a desktop application. Consequently, Twhirl can run both on OSX and Windows. The only downside is that this application doesn't have access to standard OSX components like Twitterrific, or support for keyboard shortcuts. This is offset by a much more feature rich Twitter environment along with support for other social networks built right into the Application. Link

tweetdeck
TweetDeck - The second application built on AIR, TweetDeck takes a unique approach by organising your Tweets into a multicolumn layout as well as keeping a local store of all your tweets. Add in support for some great realtime search features plus some other specialised support for Twitter services make TweetDeck a great option, but you need to have plenty of screen real estate to get the most out of it. TweetDeck is ideally suited to those of us with multiple monitor setups. Since this show was recorded, a new version of TweetDeck has been released with support for 12seconds, a sort of Twitter service but for video clips. Link

SCO0163 - Twitter

twitterlogo
Twitter! If you haven’t used it, you don’t know what you are missing! Launched in 2006, Twitter has become the de-facto standard for micro blogging and even after suffering problems with downtime and the famous “failwhale” people still go back to it, refusing to jump off Twitter onto the other micro blogging platforms. Ok, they might try others out, but they always keep one foot firmly in the twitter camp!

Twitter has long transcended its original intended usage and has been transformed by the user base into an indispensable social and business communications tool.

Basically it’s a simple centralised messaging system, which allows you to post text messages of up to 140 characters.

Simple!

You can follow other like minded people, news sites, commercial organisations, friends, family, colleagues, in fact all sorts of people and organisations and exchange messages with them. Twitter is both a noticeboard and a conversational tool allowing you to have your own “virtual watercooler” and feel more connected in this ever increasingly digital age. You really have to try it to fully understand the benefits it can bring.

Update: @jane73 from Australia has posted a typical story about a new twitter user finding her way around over on her blog - Twitter Explained, Well Sort Of... - worth checking out!

So this weeks show takes you through the basics of Twitter. The show covers:
  • Setting up a Twitter Account
  • Twitter Settings
  • Using the Twitter Web Interface
  • Finding People Using Twitter
  • Twitter Messages
  • Twitter @Replies
  • Twitter Direct Messages
  • Using Twitter Notices
That’s just for starters and will give you a good grounding in Twitter basics and using Twitter on the web.

Next week, I’ll be taking a look at some popular Twitter clients that further enhance the usability of Twitter and make it even easier to use.

SCO0161 - MobileMe Web Services [Extra! members only]

mobileme logo
Finally, MobileMe has stayed up long enough to complete my short series of MobileMe related shows. Despite lots of moaning and groaning (including from me and the rest of the guys over on the MacRoundtable podcast!), it looks like MobileMe is finally starting to stabilise and is now a usable service, despite some holes still waiting to be filled.

This week I take a look at some of the Web services and components that make up Apple new cloud computing platform and look at some tips on using them and some “workarounds” that may help you out if you use subscribed calendars. This weeks show covers:
  • Using Fluid to create a MobileMe Site Specific Browser (SSB)
  • MobileMe Web Email & Contacts
  • MobileMe Web Calendar
  • Syncronisng "Subscribed" Calendars with MobileMe
  • Google Calendar and BusySync
  • MobileMe Web Galleries
  • MobileMe iDisk
  • MobileMe Settings
That probably finishes off MobileMe for a while!

SCO0160 - 1Password on your iPhone/iPod Touch

ipasswd iphone threee
It's here! One of the most eagerly anticipated applications for both the iPhone and iPod Touch is here - 1Password.

Regular viewers will know that 1Password is one of my favourite apps for the Mac and I use it each and every day to manage my passwords, my internet identities and also to protect me against phishing scams. Although, previous versions of 1Password offered support for the iPhone via Safari bookmarklets, I've been longing for the day when a native 1Password application would be available for my iPhone.

Much to my delight, a few days ago, Agile Web Solutions released a native iPhone/iPod Touch 1Password application via the iTunes App store. What's really amazing is that the App is a free download!

In its standalone form, it allows you to keep a secured database of your usernames and passwords (and notes) for your commonly accessed websites. However, its real power comes when you combine it with the 1Password desktop application (available from Agile Web Solutions). 1Password for the iPhone allows you to sync over WiFi with your desktop 1Password data, giving you access to all your stored URLs, usernames, passwords and secure notes in your pocket! Just configure the iPhone application to securely connect to your Mac over WiFi and transfer all your invaluable web data to the iPhone or iPod touch.

This show covers:
  • Installing the iPhone Application
  • Setting up the 1Password Desktop Application for Sync
  • Configuring the iPhone Application
  • Syncing your 1Password data
  • Accessing your Logins
  • Using your Logins
  • Using the 1Password Mini Browser
  • iPhone 1Password Settings
  • Accessing Secure Notes on the iPhone
In addition, the first part of the show covers a few of the major changes to the Desktop application since we last looked at it back in December. These include:
  • Additional AntiPhishing Support
  • New Autosave prompt in Safari
  • Go&Fill HUD in the Web Browser
Along with some invaluable preparation tips you need to undertake before syncing your iPhone or iPod touch with 1Password for the first time.

Correction: One slight error in the screencast - The keyhole icon in the mini browser is in fact the list of "Logins available for the current website" not the current open browser sessions. Mind you, the developers like that idea, so you never know!

SCO0158 - iChat AV

ichaticon
Have we really not covered iChat before? iChat AV is the latest version of Apples instant messaging client included as part of OSX Leopard. It allows you to send and receive text, audio and video directly to your OSX desktop.

Updated in Leopard, iChat AV also has some new advanced features enabling you to share your screen or even deliver remote video presentations via iChat Theatre.

In this weeks show I cover:
  • iChat Basics
  • iChat Accounts
  • Using iChat on a Bonjour Network
  • Text messaging with iChat
  • Audio messaging with iChat
  • Setting up and Using an iChat Room
  • Sharing a Keynote with iChat Theatre
  • Screen Sharing with iChat
Something different this week is that I'm joined by a couple of other well know podcasters to help me out on the chat side of things, so you hear an appearance by Chris Marshall as we audio chat between the UK and Spain, along with Allison Sheridan from the NosillaCast podcast as we video conference all the way from the US. As well as a quick text chat with Klaus Lovgreen all the way over in the United Arab Emirates - truly a global show this week!

As promised, here are the links to some of the topics and people:

SCO0156 - Leech Download Manager

Leech LArge Icon
Peter Maurer is a name familiar to many Mac users, as the original creator of Textpander (re-launched as TextExpander by Smile on my Mac) as well as many other excellent Mac utilities we've touched on in previous episodes of ScreenCastsOnline (ServiceScrubber and Displaperture to name but a few!)

Peter has now turned his considerable talents to develop a brand new lightweight download manager - Leech

Leech was designed to be small yet powerful, with all the features you need to efficiently and quickly download files using full integration with the top OS X browsers - Safari, Camino, OmniWeb and FireFox (using the Flashgot plugin for FireFox).

With a simple yet elegant user interface, Leech was built from the ground up to be a great example of an OS X application.

In this weeks show, I take you through:
  • Leech Features
  • Installation and Configuration
  • Using Leech to download files
  • Creating and Using Leech Rules
  • Using Leech History
  • Camino and FireFox Integration
In addition, I also include details of a special ScreenCastsOnline discount code to get a 20% discount off the usual price of Leech, kindly supplied by Many Tricks, the sponsors of this weeks episode.

There is an additional discount available for users of other download managers who might want to purchase Leech. Just send proof of purchase of the other download manager to info@manytricks.com for futher information on obtaining the additional discount.

SCO0154 - Fluid - Managing Your WebApps

Fluid Blog
As we start to spend more and more time using Web based applications (or WebApps), the standard web browser is becoming more and more critical. The problem is that with the advent of tabbed browsing, individual WebApps become harder to manage and locate on your desktop. Add in the fact that a single bad website can sometimes crash your browser or make it unstable, you can end up losing all of your browser sessions in one fell swoop!

Fluid comes to the rescue!

Fluid is a Leopard only application that allows you to simply and easily create "Site Specific Browsers" or SSBs.

A "Site Specific Browser" is a completely separate desktop application just for one single WebApp. In effect, it turns the WebApp into a manageble service with a dedicated desktop application that's configured just for that WebApp. Each SSB you create will have its own Menu Bar, Dock Icon and runs completely independently from other SSBs or browser sessions. So now you can launch SSBs at login, switch to them using CMD TAB, basically treat it as a desktop application.

In addition to these features, Fluid also gives you the ability to convert your SSBs into MenuExtra SSBs which reside in your menubar and are accessible at the click of a mouse. If you'd like your SSB permanently displayed as your OS X Desktop, it even supports Embedded SSBs to allow you to do just that!

Along with window customisation, an extendible plugin architecture, support for GreaseKit based Userscripting and most importantly, supported by 1Password, Fluid is a simply must have application.

In this weeks show I cover:
  • Installation
  • Creating Simple SSBs (Examples: Gmail and Google Docs)
  • Window Customisation
  • Creating MenuExtra SSBs (Example: Using Hahlo for Twitter access)
  • Installing Userscripts
  • Creating Embedded SSBs (Example: Using Google Calendars as your OSX Desktop)
  • Fluid Plugins
  • Finding Fluid Icons via flickr
  • Updating Fluid Icons to High Res versions
Fluid is completely free and available to download from www.fluidapp.com

SCO0151 - Evernote for Mac - Part 1 [Extra! Only]

Applications
I think I may have found the answer to my perpetual quest for an efficient and effective way to keep all the bits of information I accumulate everyday. You know the problem - lots of bits of texts, web pages, ideas, thoughts, images, reminders, notes, etc,. So much "stuff" but nowhere sensible to store them so that I have access from any computer or any device.

And then as for thinking up ways to organise and label things so that you can find it again - nightmare!

This weeks show is all about Evernote - a personal information manager which seems to address all the requirements I have for my information store.

There's so much to cover, I've had to split this show into two parts, the second part will be released next week.

Evernote is many things!
  • Firstly, at its core is a web based service that allows you to access your information via any industry standard web browser.
  • Secondly, Evernote has local client applications for both the Mac and Windows that allow you to capture and store information locally and syncronise with the Evernote Web service.
  • Thirdly, Evernote has mobile clients, plus an iPhone optimised web interface, so you can access all your information on the move.
Not only that, but Evernote includes some amazing character recognition technology so that any photos or digital images with text (even handwritten text) that you capture in Evernote, become searchable!! You really have to see it to appreciate it and of course this weeks show will show you!

Next weeks show will look at some additional features of Evernote including some pretty handy tips on using Evernote with your iPhone.

SCO0150 - TextExpander

TextExpanderlogo
An invaluable utility this week, one that I seriously could not function without!

It's TextExpander from Smile On My Mac.

On first glance, it looks like a very simple utility to help you save time. It allows you to create small textual abbreviations that, when typed, will expand into words, sentences, paragraphs or even images. It can even trigger AppleScripts, just by typing a few characters or even a single character!

What's really special is that it's a system wide utility so you're not restricted to just your email or word processor, TextExpander works with all the applications on your Mac.

Speed up your typing, use it to auto-correct commonly misspelt words, respond to emails in a flash, generate tons of CSS or HTML code, TextExpander really does give your productivity a boost.

In this weeks show I cover:
  • Some common uses of TextExpander
  • Creating your own Snippets
  • Using Date and Time Variables
  • Positioning the cursor in Snippets
  • Using text selections to create Snippets
  • TextExpander Groups including
  • Adding from a File and URL
  • Predefined Snippet Groups
  • AppleScript Support
The free version of this weeks show is sponsored by Smile On My Mac and they have kindly offered a 20% discount to ScreenCastsOnline viewers up to July 31st 2008. To purchase TextExpander using this discount, just visit the special ScreenCastsOnline landing page at

SCO0147 - JumpCut, DejaMenu & SoundSource [Extra Only]

Something different this week, not one but three really useful utilities.

What's even better is that they are all free!
JumpCut - A great clipboard buffering application which takes a minimilistic approach to give you access to your recent clipboard entries. Go back in time and select from a list of recent clips from either your menu bar or via a hot key and bezel - Website Link Jumpcut_ Minimalist Clipboard Buffering for OS X
DejaMenu - Large or multiscreen setup? Fed up of having to travel all the way to the top of the screen to access your applications menu? Or even worse, having to traverse monitors to get access? DejaMenu allows you configure every applications menu to pop up right where your cursor is, saving you effort and time. You can even assign your menus to popup with a click of your mouse! - Website Link DejaMenu 1.2.2 for MacOS X
SoundSource - Constantly juggling different audio outputs and inputs on your Mac? SoundSource gives you access to all your audio devices quickly and easily through a single icon in your menu bar as well as a volume control for each device - Website Link Rogue Amoeba - Freebies
In addition, the members version of this weeks show has a special section just for members which explains the renewal process and what to do to prevent your membership expiring, and what to do if it does!

SCO0146 - Automator

autoicon_small
We revisit one of OSXs most misunderstood features this week and that's the latest version of Automator in Leopard.

Automator is a way of creating special applications or plugins that allow you to "automate" repetitive tasks. Each workflow is built up from a number of predefined actions that are bundled in with most of Apples own applications and an increasing number of third party applications. Initially introduced in Tiger, Automator has received a significant make over in Leopard with the introduction of some brand new features, mainly the ability to record tasks using the new "Watch Me Do" feature along with the introduction of user and system generated variables to use in your workflows.

So if the thought of AppleScript sends shivers down your spine, check out some the new features of Automator.

The show covers:
  • Automator Basics
  • The revised Interface
  • Creating a Sample Workflow to resize images
  • Creating a Sample Workflow with Text and Speech
  • Saving Workflows as Applications
  • Saving Workflows as Plugins
  • Creating a Sample Workflow with "Watch Me Do"
  • Creating and Scheduling an iCal Plugin
This weeks show also includes an Extra! section only available to ScreenCastsOnline Extra! members:
  • Variables in Automator
  • Creating a Sample Workflow including Variables

SCO0142 - Pages 08

iWork 08 icon
Finishing off the trio of shows all about iWork '08, this weeks show brings you up to date with the newly revised Pages'08, Apples flexible, yet powerful, word processor and page layout application.

Addressing the major complaints about Pages'06, mainly that it wasn't a "proper" word processor, Apple have completely revised Pages '08 to include a brand new "word processor" mode, in addition to its original page layout mode. To make it even easier to use, Apple have also introduced the context sensitive format bar in line with the other iWork applications to allow for less reliance on the inspector panels and give you control of the common elements right within the application window itself.

Following on from the previous show I did on Pages '06 (nearly two years ago!), this show will bring you up to speed on lots of the new functions and capabilities of this outstanding package!

This weeks show is a free show, but there is an extended show available for ScreenCastsOnline Extra! members with an additional 10 minutes of content and chapter marks. Extra! members will receive the extended show automatically as usual.

The show covers:
  • Introduction to Pages '08
  • Using the Format Bar
  • Paragraph, Character & List Styles
  • Page & Section Breaks
  • Tracking Changes in Documents
The Extra! members extended show also covers:
  • Working with Images in Pages
  • Instant Alpha
  • Wrapping Text around images
  • Masking Images and Picture Frames
  • Text Flow in Page Layout Mode
  • Exporting

SCO0141 - ScheduleOnce [Extra Only]

Scheduleonce
We've all been there - You need to organise a meeting between a group of people and end up with an avalanche of emails from people who can make this day but not that. Or change their availability three times in a week. As for trying to arrange something across time zones with daylight savings time thrown into the mix - absolute nightmare.

Well recently I've been in just that position trying to schedule recording sessions for the Mac Roundtable! 10 very busy podcasters across 4 different time zones all trying to synchronise our activities and come up with a shared free slot to record.

In this age of Web 2.0, I thought there must be a service somewhere that could come to our rescue and sort out this complex organisational task.

So a quick bit of research and I found it! - ScheduleOnce

After using it for a day or so I was so impressed I thought I'd spread the word to help out ScreenCastsOnline viewers who are also tasked with sorting out meeting schedules. So I abandoned my plan for this week and did a show all about ScheduleOnce, especially as its completely free to use.

As a web based service its totally cross platform, you don't need to register and did I mention it's free. You don't even need to know what time zones all the participants are in.

It's simply a matter of setting up a meeting notice (which takes 2 minutes) and emailing a special link to your invited participants. They respond using the link, and the system gives you a view of all the responses and allows you to select the optimum time and email them with the confirmed date and time, all formatted in their local timezone.

This weeks show takes you through setting up a meeting, let's you see what the invitees receive and show you the responses and how you process them!

I hope this makes your life easier as it did mine!

SCO0140 - ScreenSteps and ScreenSteps Live

Screensteps icon
ScreenSteps is a great application from Blue Mango Learning Systems that makes creating, annotating and publishing instructions or task based documentation a breeze. Now although ScreenCasts are a brilliant way to get across complex information, sometimes there's no substitute for step by step instruction manuals with clear screenshots and good, consise instructions. The problem with creating "printed" documentation is that it can be difficult to assemble and can go out of date very easily requiring Herculean effort to update. And as for trying to keep on top of changes to videos - forget it!

Screensteps is cross platform application for both the Mac and Windows, which allows you to create libraries of "lessons", each lesson being a step by step process covering whatever tasks you want to document. Available in both a free version and a pay for version, the application has comprehensive tools built right in for screen capture and image annotation to easily and quickly build up step based documentation. Once you've created your lessons, ScreenSteps also has some powerful export functions that allow you export your lessons in either customised PDF or HTML format (in the pay for version) or even directly to a hosted ScreenSteps Live web service (included in the free version as well as the paid for version).

As well as exporting individual lessons, ScreenSteps allows you to organise your lessons into topics and sections, allowing you to create individual PDF files or HTML output containing an entire Library of lessons complete with a table of contents and easy navigation. The PDF version collates all your lessons into a multi page PDF whilst the HTML output provides all the code you need to upload to your website for online documentation.

If you're not sure about uploading HTML files to your website (or if you don't have a website) be sure to check out Part 2 of this ScreenSteps show where I'll be taking a look at ScreenSteps Live, a free service to host your ScreenSteps lessons. ScreenSteps Free and ScreenSteps Live are tightly integrated and it's really easy to export your lessons directly and automatically to ScreenSteps Live from within ScreenSteps.

As well as the free options, there are Standard and Pro versions of ScreenSteps which allow you to export locally to PDF and HTML so once you've tried the package, you can upgrade to get the full features.

Part 2 - ScreenSteps Live

SCO0138 - HoudaSpot v2 and HoudaGeo

Not one but two top applications featured in this weeks show! This weeks episode is sponsored by Houdah Software and I cover both HoudahSpot and HoudahGeo.

HSicon
HoudahSpot is no stranger to regular ScreenCastsOnline viewers as we covered it back in March 2007. Since then, HoudahSpot has been completely re-written to take advantage of some of the new technologies in OS X Leopard. HoudahSpot is really what Spotlight should have been and even with the improvements to Spotlight in Leopard, HoudaSpot enables you to take search on the Mac to the next level. It doesn't replace the underlying Spotlight engine, it justs gives you a much more flexible yet powerful "front end" to your Spotlight data. Add in Templates, the new BlitzSearch Menubar icon, integration with Launchbar and much more, HoudahSpot is a great addition to your Mac.

HGicon
HoudahGeo is one of those applications you need to see to fully understand its capabilities! That's why we have ScreenCastsOnline! It's an application that allows you to easily "geotag" your photos with location data without needing access to a specialised GPS device or expensive GPS enable camera. HoudaGeo lets you simply add in location data visually using either a simple Map option or using its built in integration with Google Earth. But if you have got a GPS tracker, it can use that as well!

As well as allowing you to "Geotag" your photos, HoudahGeo also allows you to share you photos with its built in uploading integration with Google Earth and Flickr. Once Geotagged, just a click of a button and your photos will be uploaded and placed in the correct position on global maps with Google Earth or Flickr - it's really that easy!

Once you've exported to Google Earth, the show will demonstrate how you can create a virtual slideshow in Google Earth, flying from loction to location and displaying your photos at each location! Not only that, but you can email the slideshow to friends or family and they can watch it in Google Earth on their own computer (without needing a copy of HoudahGeo) - how cool is that!

SCO0136 - Leopard 10.5.2 and Spaces

spaces
Busy, busy week this week! Apple finally released Leopard 10.5.2 and in a flash, put right a lot of the issues and complaints people were having with the User Interface. So this week I take a look at some of the changes in the new update and the best way to install it.

Also, I've been holding off doing a show on Spaces, the virtual desktop management system in Leopard, as I must admit, I did find it a little buggy! Hopefully 10.5.2 has fixed that so the second part of the show is all about Spaces. In this section I cover:
  • Spaces Concepts
  • Setting Up Spaces
  • Moving Between Spaces
  • Visualising Spaces
This weeks show is the first that contains an Extra! section just for ScreenCastsOnline Extra! members. In this additional section I cover:
  • Moving Apps & Objects Between Spaces
  • Organising Spaces by Task
Some major changes to the show format this week in that I've introduced a brand new theme and and transition clips. The new theme was commissioned from Geoff Smith, podcast theme maker extraordinaire! To celebrate, I spent some time putting together a new opening sequence, a new chapter marker and a new ending. All in motion graphics. I hope you like them!

SCO0134 - PDFPen - PDF Editor

PDFpen-1
It's been a while since I first found PDFPen, a great utility for editing PDFs. With the introduction of Version 3, however, the application now has some amazing features allowing you to edit the embedded images and text in the PDF itself!

Add in the ability to create and insert text, images, signatures and scribbles into a PDF and even create your own libraries of often used material, no longer do you have to spend hundreds of dollars on Adobe Acrobat!

This show is sponsored by Smile On My Mac, the publishers of PDFPen and covers:

  • Introduction to PDFPen
  • Manipulating PDF pages
  • Working with Text
  • Editing original PDF text
  • Working with Columns
  • Copying Text
  • Searching for Text, Notes and Comments
  • Working with Images
  • Editing original PDF images
  • Adding your own Images
  • Filling in PDF Forms
  • Adding Your Signature
  • Making Transparent Images
  • Applescript Support

SCO0126 - Leopard - iCal (Part 1) [Extra! Only]

App
I've been holding off doing a show on iCal for a while now, but I'm glad I did. Leopard and the iPhone has brought a new lease of life to iCal, the calendar application included with Mac OS X.

Under the hood, there's a ton of cool and really useful features that now make iCal a credible and reliable tool to help you plan, organise and share your busy schedule.

In fact, there's so much stuff to cram in, I've had to split the show into two parts! In this first part, I cover:
  • iCal User Interface Basics
  • Creating and Managing Calendars
  • Calendar Groups
  • Creating and Editing Events
  • Setting up Mail for iCal invitations
  • Using Invitations to Setup Meetings
  • Mail Integration
  • Using Data Detectors in Mail
  • Setting up To Dos via Mail
Part 2 will be along shortly looking at some of the more advanced features of iCal.

This weeks show is an Extra Members show and is available in Apple TV HD format (1280x720), Enhanced Desktop ED Format (960x540) and iPhone/iPod resolution (640x360). SCO0124 - Leopard - Desktop & Stacks [Extra! Only]

screen-1
This weeks' show is the last Leopard related screencast for a couple of weeks, and it's all about a couple of the most controversial aspects of Leopard, and that's the Leopard Desktop and Stacks.

These two areas seem to have been the most contentious, what with the missing rounded corners, the translucent menu bar and the perception of the 3D dock as being just eye candy! Not to mention the dubious visual metaphor of Stacks using the foremost icon in the dock - very confusing!

Well in this weeks' show, we'll examine all these features and look at some resolutions using some free third party applications. So this weeks show covers:
  • New Menu Bar
  • Recreating Rounded Corners
  • Turning off the Translucency
  • Configuring New Screensavers
  • Customising the 3D Dock
  • Stacks Overview
  • Fixing Stacks Visuals
  • Creating a Recent Items Stack

As promised, here are the links to the various utilities used in this weeks show:

OpaqueMenuBar
Displaperture
Leopard Docks
Stack Overlay Icons

SCO0119 - Single eMail Inbox for the iPhone and Mac

Struggling with finding the optimum email solution to use with your iPhone? Do you have multiple email accounts that you'd like to process in a single universal inbox? Would you like to have all your email synchronised and available from any device and from any location?

If so this weeks show may be for you.

It's my personal journey from traditional POP based email clients through web based solutions to finally a scheme that gives me the flexibility and control to access all my email from anywhere. It's all about IMAP and harnessing the power of IMAP using .Mac Mail to give you the best of all worlds when accessing your mail. But IMAP is just part of the solution. You need to have a way of channelling all your mail into a single inbox.

Even if you're not an iPhone user, the recently expanded .Mac service gives you some huge benefits over more traditional POP or web based solutions.

This week show covers:

  • Introduction to POP email
  • Introduction to Web based email
  • Utilising GMail Mail Fetcher
  • Introduction to .Mac Mail
  • Configuring POP, GMAIL and .Mac
  • Creating a single universal Inbox

Update - As of today (24th October 2007 - a couple of weeks following this shows publication) Google are slowly introducing IMAP support into gmail accounts. This removes the need to forward GMail into .Mac for the IMAP capabilities of .Mac. Of course, if you still want the advanced facilities of .Mac under Leopard. This solution is still valid.

If you're an Extra! member and would like to download the presentations as mentioned in this weeks show, you can download them from this page.

As mentioned in the show, I'd really appreciate it if you could complete the ScreenCastsOnline survey form at:

SCO0113 - Housekeeping with Hazel

hazel2 copy
Time to take control of your messy folders and do a bit of Housekeeping! This weeks show features a great utility for managing your files, folders, trash and un-installs. All in one easy to use, yet exceptionally powerful package.

This week's show is sponsored by NoodleSoft and features their recently upgraded application - Hazel.

Hazel is a utility that resides in your preference pane (and optionally your Menu bar) and constantly monitors the folders that you instruct it to. By applying rules, you can make Hazel move, sort, colour, re-arrange, file... well pretty much anything with your files and folders. The really cool thing is it does it all automatically once you've created your rules.

For example, simply create a a rule for Hazel to monitor your desktop and automatically move completed downloads from your desktop to a sorted folder structure. Hazel does it for you automatically.

Add in some neat features to manage your Trash effectively and finish off with App Sweep to help you cleanly un-install applications.

App Sweep is built into Hazel and cleans your mac by sweeping up the miscellaneous files that a standard uninstall leaves behind, and you've got a pretty fully featured package that makes keeping your mac in tip top shape a pleasure.

SCO0110 - LaunchBar, RapidWeaver and SiteMap [Extra! Only]

PicturesqueSome significant updates have been released to applications I've previously covered on ScreenCastsOnline. Mix in a new website design on the ScreenCastsOnline website plus installing and configuring a cool Rapidweaver template to provide automated site maps and you have the basis of a pretty packed show this week! I'm pretty jazzed about the new website design so I thought I'd share it with you as I know the majority of ScreenCastsOnline viewers get all the shows via iTunes.

lbObjective Development have released a new version of one of my favourite Mac apps and that's Objective Development (actually 4.3.1 came out just after finishing recording). LaunchBar is much more than an application launcher as it enables you to search, switch and launch and gives you compete control over your mac with just a few simple keystrokes. LaunchBar has introduced some additional features in this release that extend its power considerably and without getting too much into the QuickSilver vs LaunchBar debate :-) I've found that LaunchBar is a killer app for the mac!

ApplicationsYes, I know we only did the introduction of Rapidweaver 3.6 a short few weeks ago, but RealMac Software have just released RapidWeaver 3.6.2 which further extend the usefulness and ease of use of what already is an amazing product! A quick run through and demo of the new features in included in this week's show.

SiteMapOne of the new features I introduced with the new ScreenCastsOnline site is the introduction of some SiteMap pages. SiteMaps are great for allowing users to see the entire contents of your website on a single page and easily find and navigate to content. SiteMaps are also incredibly useful in ensuring that your SEO or "Search Engine Optimisation" is in good health. Google and other search engines use sitemaps to fully crawl through your website and ensure all your content is indexed and searchable. Rather than attempt to do this by hand, I stumbled on SiteMap by LogHound. This is an inexpensive RapidWeaver plugin that does it all for you with minimal configuration. It's also useful for finding pages that still have the default RapidWeaver settings. In this weeks show, I take you through an expalination on how to configure the product and demonstrate the results!

This week is also the start of the revised scheme for Extra! members in that there will now be an Extra! members show every two weeks instead of one a month, and this is the first such show. If you're not an Extra! member, you'll only get the first 5 minutes or so of this weeks show but as a consolation, it will be in HD. Back to a full free show next week but if you'd like to get all the shows in future plus get immediate access to a library over 100+ screencasts, just follow this link to get full details and instructions to sign up.

SCO0106 - Managing Your Bookmarks

Applications
As Mac users, we're faced with a tremendous choice in the various browsers available to us! If you're like me, it's really hard to stick to one so we're constantly switching between browsers or trying new ones as they get updated.

Wouldn't it be great if you could manage all your browser bookmarks centrally and them have all browsers use the same set of bookmarks seamlessly!

If you've a number of macs, how about being able to syncronise not only between browsers on the same machine, but between multiple browsers plus your desktop and laptop?

And what about the iPhone? Sure iTunes will sync your Safari bookmarks but what if you're a Firefox or Camino user on your desktop machine?

Well this weeks show will provide you with the solution to all these problems with a single piece of software and that's Bookit from EveryDay Software. Bookit is a low cost application that allows you to do all these things.

The show explains in detail:

  • Installation
  • Initial Configuration
  • Bookmark Syncing on a Single Mac
  • Bookmark Syncing between Multiple Macs using .Mac
  • Other Bookit Features

Also this week is a special Extra! members section only available in the Extra! members versions of the show. This special section covers a free utility designed to provide fully PC compatible zip files using drag and drop. Also included is a really neat way of configuring the Finder to accomodate drag and drop applications in a very cool way!

The special session is only available to Extra! members, full details on how to become an Extra! member and access the special versions of the shows including HD and Apple TV versions (1280x720) can be found on this page - ScreenCastsOnline Extra! Membership Special Offer

Membership also gives you access to over 100+ previous ScreenCastsOnline shows - over 24 hours of premium content!

SCO0105 - OS X Services

Desktop-1
Back to basics this week and hopefully it'll relieve the pressure off the credit card for our US based friends who may have maxed out buying the iPhone!

This week I cover one of the most misunderstood, under appreciated and under utilised functions with OS X and that's OSX Services.

OSX Services are like mini utilities that help you manipulate, format and transfer text into all sorts of applications. I'll be looking atService Scrubber which is a donationware application which allows you to enable and disable services, restructure your services menu and assign keystrokes to service actions.

Also, I take a look at some of the more useful services and touch on how to use the TextExpander service. It's possible to download and install services and I take a look at WordService and TinyUrl , both extremely useful OSX services.

Finally, I take a look at configuring QuickSilver to access your OS X Services directly instead of via the menu.

All in all, a pretty packed (and hopefully informative) show!

This week's show is an Extra! members only show so subscribers to the free feed will only get a sampler of the full show. To get more information on becoming a ScreenCastsOnline Extra! member, visit the Become a Member page.

SCO0101 - Act-On - Assign Email Rules to Keystrokes

MailActOn
Take control of your email inbox with this great free Mail plugin!

This week's screencast covers one of the utilities I use everyday to help me keep my email organised and at least feel as though I'm in control.

It's a simple mail plugin that allows you to create special rules which you can then assign to simple keystrokes. The rules can be as simple or as complex as you'd like allowing you to easily colour code your email, move email messages to folders or basically anything you can do with a standard email rule but under your control. The screencast even shows you how you can assign multiple rules to a single keystroke and build in a level of intelligence in how the messages are handled based on the content.

This weeks show is for Extra! members only but you can see a trailer for the show from the ScreenCastsOnline website.

SCO0100 - The 100th Show - Elgato turbo.264 & OmniPlan

Applications-3
Yes, the 100th show!

Thanks for all the support and good wishes from everyone which has made reaching this milestone possible!

This week is a double episode covering two very distinctly different product areas.

Elgato turbo.264 Video Encoder - The first is the new hardware based H.264 video encoder from Elgato. This innocuous and inexpensive piece of kit plugs into a spare USB 2 port on your Mac and turbocharges your H.264 video encoding with amazing results. If you do any amount of video encoding for your iPod or Apple TV you must watch this screencast!

You'll be amazed at how cheaply you can double, treble or even quadruple your video encoding speed, even on an older Mac!

omniplan
OmniPlan - The second part of the screencast is all about the Project Management application OnmniPlan from Omni Group. I don't usually cover business based applications in ScreenCastsOnline, so this is a bit of an experiment. If you like it, let me know and I'll cover some more business applications.

OmniPlan is another of those Omni Group applications that just works and make planning on the Mac a pleasure!

The screencast covers the basic UI and functions of OmniPlan and leads you through making a simple project plan. I also cover some of the exporting features on OmniPlan.

As mentioned in the screencast, you can get a 10% discount of the usual price of OmniPlan by using the coupon code SCREENCASTPLAN when buying via the online store (valid up to 15th July 2007.

As mentioned in the show, as a celebration of the 100th episode, I'm releasing both the Hi Definition version (1280x720) and the Enhanced Definition (960x540) for freedownload together with a time limited offer of a discounted Extra! membership offer. SCO0081 - Quicksilver Introduction

qslogo
Welcome to the first show of 2007! This week I cover something I never thought I would. Being a Launchbar user I never really felt the need to use Quicksilver as it seemed pretty alien to me and besides, Launchbar is great. It was only when I delved deeper into Quicksilver that I realised just how powerful it could be - and not only that, it's free!

So this week is an introduction in installing, configuring and basic usage of QuickSilver - the application launcher (and much more) from Blacktree Inc.

As it's also the first show of the month, this is an Extra! members only show, so you'll need to be an Extra! member to view the full version in high resolution. More details on the Extra! membership here.

SCO0077 - Kinkless GTD - Extra! Only Show

kinklesslogo
This weeks show is for Extra! members only, and covers a unique application which is really a series of free Applescripts that help you implement David Allens "Getting Things Done" (GTD) productivity methodology. What's unique about this implementation is that these scripts are fully integrated with OmniOutliner Pro, iCal and QuickSilver and together make a seamless and powerful organisational tool.

The scripts were developed by Ethan Schoonover and he has released them as the Kinkless GTD package or KGTD which are available for free download from his site.

David Allens GTD system is a well established productivity methodology, and I'd really recommend getting a hold of the GTD book to understand some of the basic principles. There are some pretty powerful and effective techniques in there for getting hold of all the stuff we normally juggle in our heads which stress us out, and depositing that stuff into a tried and trusted system where we can more effectively process the required actions to get things running smoothly.

SCO0068 - OmniOutliner - Part 2

omnioutliner3

SCO0067 - OmniOutliner - Part 1

omnioutliner3
This week we take a look at another premier Mac application and this time it's OmniOutliner from the Omni Group.

OmniOutliner is "an amazingly flexible program for creating, collecting, and organizing information" - I couldn't have said it better myself!

This must be one of the most requested screencasts from ScreenCastsOnline viewers mainly due to the fact that the power of the application isn't immediately apparent when first trying the application. If you've bought an Intel Mac you may be suprised to learn that you've already got a copy of OmniOutliner installed as it comes pre-installed on all new Intel macs.

As this edition of ScreenCastsOnline has been sponsored by the Omni Group, it is being released into the free feed at a much higher resolution than normal at 960x540. ScreenCastsOnline Extra! members usually only get this resolution but they also get a higher resolution again of 1280x720. SCO0035 - TextPander and BlogAssist

blogassisttexy
A short screencast this week for reasons that will become apparent! It covers two very simple text editing and replacement utilities that are invaluable.

The first utility is Textpander - a system wide utility that enables you to create short abbreviations that expand to words, sentences even full pages including images when typed. The beauty of this utility is that this functionality is extended across most mac apps that use text entry not just word processing. So you can use it in creating standard mail responses in mail, signatures, html code templates, etc.

The second utility is BlogAssist - this utility resides in your menubar and allows you to copy a piece of text, wrap some HTML code around it and paste it back into your working document. It's really useful for anyone who does a lot of HTML markup when creating webpages etc. Have a look a the screencast, it's very simple once you see it in action!

Both products are donationware and I would encourage you to support the developers of these super products!

Please leave all comments about this ScreenCast on the SCO Forum Message Board. This link will take you straight to the thread discussing this show. Update: Check out some extra tips from Thomas, one of the Forum regulars - Excellent!
