An iPad and iPhone 4 free show this week as promised.... well sort of!

Time for another Mac Montage episode where I cover a number of shorter hints and tips, along with software or utilities that may not warrant a complete show of their own.

This week I cover:

Remote Reboot via SSH Despite being an extremely stable platform, OS X does crash occasionally! More often than not, you may just lose keyboard or mouse control. The last thing anyone wants to do is do a hard reset of their machine, but if you have a second Mac handy (or even an SSH client on your iPhone or iPad), you can remotely access your Mac and do a controlled shutdown or reboot - much safer! This section shows you how to setup Remote Login on your mac and demonstrates how to connect via a second Mac.
Adding Media to iTunes 9: Yes, it’s pretty easy to add media into iTunes via drag and drop but did you know you have a folder on your Mac that will send media placed in it directly to your iTunes library? “Automatically Add To iTunes” was introduced with iTunes 9 and is proving to be a very useful technique for getting media into iTunes, either locally or by connecting from a second machine.
PDF Adder Script : With the advent of iBooks on both the iPad and iPhone, iTunes support for PDF now becomes very interesting. iTunes has had support for PDF for quite a while, but it’s mainly been overlooked. The support for PDFs within iBooks now makes PDF an attractive format for transferring any reading material between your Mac, you iPad and your iPhone. This section covers one of “Doug’s AppleScripts for iTunes” that gives you control over the conversion and transfer of any document on your Mac into iTunes. There are three scripts in the suite: PDF Dropper - install a droplet on your Mac to simply drag PDFs onto and have them transferred into iTunes, with the added benefit of optionally editing the metadata during the transfer. Add PDF to iTunes via Print Dialog - This is a script that plugs into the standard OS X print dialog box. Any document that can be printed can now be converted to PDF, metadata updated and transferred directly to iTunes to be synchronised via iBooks to your mobile devices - very powerful! Have we really not covered iChat before? iChat AV is the latest version of Apples instant messaging client included as part of OSX Leopard. It allows you to send and receive text, audio and video directly to your OSX desktop.

Updated in Leopard, iChat AV also has some new advanced features enabling you to share your screen or even deliver remote video presentations via iChat Theatre.

Last show of the year so I thought I'd go out with something special!

A couple of weeks ago, I stumbled upon a software package called Remote Buddy which allows you to use your Apple Remote to do all sorts of clever things with your Intel Mac. Included in the package is a very clever piece of software which is basically a fully featured Ajax web server that allows you full control over iTunes from a browser.

Add in an Airport Express to allow you to transmit your music from your Mac to a remote set of powered speakers or a HiFi over Wifi and you have an incredible system for creating multi room audio throughout the house.

But it gets even better when you add in an iPhone or iPod Touch which allows you to access the Remote Buddy Ajax Web server and control your audio system via WiFi. Not just control the playback, but control the volume, search your iTunes library, select your Airport Express and even view the album art of the currently selected track on your iPhone.

This weeks show covers all these elements in 20 minute including:

To give you (and your wallet!) a rest from all the cool applications I've been featuring recently, I've gone back to basics and produced a primer for the OS X Terminal.

OS X Terminal gives you direct command line access to the Unix shell on which OS X is built on. While it may seem intimidating to some people, there are lots of really useful and immensely powerful tools available to you from Terminals command line interface.

An update to an already spectacular package! Yup, SpyMe has hit version 2 and now includes some really great new features to help you remotely access and monitor other Macs. I've previously covered SpyMe in a previous screencast (SCO0065) which was an Extra! members only screencast, but the new features make the package worthy of a re-visit.

A 25 minute show on a wireless router! What started out as a possible small snippet within a show turned out to be worthy of a full show all of its own! Yes, it's all about Apples brilliant new Airport Extreme Wireless Base Station.

Due to the sheer size of the full show, I've had to remove or shorten certain sections in the free show. The full 35 minute version of the show is available to Extra Members. This weeks show covers:

Another Extra! members only show this week, but I've included a special taster version in the free feed.

Well we've all been there, your friend or relative is having some issues with their mac and you just know that if you could spend a few minutes on the machine you'd have it sorted in minutes! The only problem being that the mac is several hundred miles away!

This weeks show gives you a view on a simple solution for just this scenario and shows you an inexpensive product which allows you to remotely access and control a mac, together with another application which is free and allows you to setup a secure virtual private network (or VPN) across the Internet even traversing firewalls and eliminating problems with NAT.

The two applications are SpyMe and Hamachi - In fact, we also look at HamachiX which is an unofficial graphical front end for Hamachi on OSX.

The free show is in the the usual Desktop and iPod format of 640x360 so if you want to get the higher resolution versions of the full show, you need to sign up as a ScreenCastsOnline Extra! member.
