SCO0237 - Mac Montage 12 [Members Show]

This week I cover two brand new utilities and revisit a third.

In detail. the show covers:
Quix Bookmarklet: The bookmarklet to rule them all! If, like me, you're building up a lot of bookmarklets in your bookmarks bar, this amazing utility may be the answer to all your problems. Basically, Quiz is a single bookmarklet containing over 100+ built in commands, allowing to access all sorts of functionality from your browser. These commands support a wide range of functions including Basic commands, Social commands, WordPress, SEO, Webmaster, Quix, Analytics, URL Shortening even App and Mac Integration commands, all built into the single Quix bookmarklet. It's like LaunchBar for your browser. Even better still, Quix is extensible and allows you to create your own Quix commands, removing the need for all those individual bookmarklets. The icing on the cake though is that Quix works on your iPhone or iPad. If you're a MobileMe user, Quix will synchronise with your mobile device and give you all the Quix functionality whilst you're out and about!

In the show I show you how to install Quix and invoke it with a keyboard shortcut in Safari, demonstrate some of the commands and show you how to create a custom quiz command based on the "add to Boxee" bookmarklet from last weeks show. In addition, I take a look at Quix on the iPhone and demonstrate its use.

Quix
Notational Velocity: We've already looked at NV in a previous show but one question I keep getting is how to synchronise NV across Macs. The latest version of NV has just been released with support for syncing your notes via Simplenote - a free web based service.

nv_small
Simplenote: A free web based service for creating and storing simple notes! With the built in integration with Notational Velocity, you now have a robust and powerful workflow. Simplenote also has a free iPhone app so it's now possible to sync you notes across Macs, to the web and to your iPhone or iPad - Amazing! This part of the show demonstrates setting up a Simplenote account and synchronising with NV. I also show you how it works on the iPhone.

SCO0182 - Mac Hints & Tips Montage - 05 [Extra! members only]

2009Jan
Unusually, this is the second Extra members only show in a row due to the fact that we had two free shows out of sequence last year!

Even more unusually, this is the second Mac Montage show in a row! This week I've recorded a show in advance as it's Macworld week and there is no way I could record a normal show whilst at Macworld, so I thought I'd do one in advance for you.

Four new hints and tips in this weeks show:

SpaceSuit: It's always struck me as strange that Apple never built this functionality into Spaces itself - that being the ability to use separate wallpapers or images for each space you have setup. So this free utility fills the gap and allows you to do just that, making spaces seem just more useable.

Links: SpaceSuit
SpaceSuit
Dock Spaces: Another free utility, but this time enhancing the functionality of the Dock. It has two modes, either giving you multiple configurable docks as well as Spaces integration. No you can have a different dock for each Space in Leopard. Combine this with SpaceSuit and suddenly Spaces takes on a whole new level of functionality.

Links: Dock Spaces
Downloads
Full Keyboard Access: Built right into OS X, Full Keyboard Access allows you to control all aspects of the OS X interface just by using the keyboard. Want to activate a different button on a dialog box than the default? Just TAB and Space and you're done - No mousing required.
System Preferences
Creating an EMail Signature using TextExpander: Another request - How do I create my email sig to include a graphic and embedded links. All is revealed and TextExpander is the answer!

SCO0181 - Mac Hints & Tips Montage - 04 [Extra! members only]

2009Jan
As promised, a ScreenCastsOnline Extra! members only show this week (and next!) and it's a Mac Montage show.

This week I cover three separate hints and tips to get the most out of your Mac:

Secrets: A very smart preference pane that gives you access to a database of hidden settings for both OSX and many popular OSX Applications. No need to chant incantations or type long and unwieldy commands in terminal, Secrets gives you a simple GUI to access the settings and also buttons to restart Applications and services. I examine just a fraction of the hidden settings available including resetting and changing the appearance of the Dock, plus an exceptionally handy tip for iTunes.

Links: Secrets Website
System Preferences
Fiwi: Ever wished that Finder had two panes by default. Ever so handy when comparing folder contents or dragging and dropping. Well Fiwi is a simple utility that allows you to fire up two finder windows with one click and have them align and resize next to each other automatically, either in row or column configuration. You can even set a specific window configuration if you'd like. Very handy!

Untitled
Smart Playlists: Still using the Podcast section in iTunes to sync and manage your podcasts on your iPod or iPhone? In this section, I show you how I manage my podcasts using smart playlists to create sorted playlists which manage themselves.

SCO0179 - Mac Switcher & MacUpdate Holiday Bundles

dec2008
A public service announcement this week! OK, perhaps not, but it sure feels like it. I've abandoned my schedule this week to bring you details of two outstanding Mac bundles that could save you a ton of cash.

To be honest though, it's not really the savings but more the fact that the bundles contain some of the finest Mac software available and I really don't want you to miss out on the opportunity of buying these applications at amazing prices. But for one of the bundles, you'll need to move very fast as it finishes on the 18th December 2008. To get the message out to the widest audience, this weeks show is not the scheduled members only show, so I'll be doing a couple of members shows in sequence in a couple of weeks.

Mac Switcher Bundle

macswitcher
The first bundle is the Mac Switcher Bundle which contains ScreenCastsOnline favourites 1Password, TextExpander and Witch.

For full disclosure I should point out that I've also contributed 10 ScreenCastsOnline videos from the archive, all aimed at the new mac switcher.

As I've covered both 1Password and TextExpander in previous episodes I've mentioned them in passing, but as Witch has not been covered before I've done a full section on Witch. Witch is a super window switcher for the Mac. Why do we need a window switcher when we already have Expose? Well, Witch allows you to switch between open and minimised windows of all running applications via the keyboard.

Four Safari windows open? Switch seamlessly between them with a few simple keystokes.

Witch displays an on-screen panel allowing you to see all open or minimised windows and navigate between them using the keyboard or even the scrollwheel on you mouse.

Check out the Mac Switcher Bundle here for links to all the applications. The bundle is available util 31st January 2008

MacUpdate Holiday Bundle

MacUpdate Promo Holiday Bundle - Make 2009 the best year ever for you and your Mac.
The second bundle is one you need to move fast on if you want to get it!

Containing applications we've covered before, new applications and updated applications, the MacUpdate Holiday Bundle is 10 applications at a killer price! I think it's fair to say that several of the applications are worth the price of the bundle individually if not more.

The bundle comprises the full versions of Rapidweaver, Drive Genius 2, Default Folder X, KeyCue, VirusBarrier 5, Little Snitch, WhatSize, MacPilot, iVolume and MacGourmet Deluxe.

The show gives a brief explanation of each application drilling into more detail for Drive Genius 2, Default Folder X, KeyCue, VirusBarrier 5, Little Snitch and WhatSize. Rapidweaver 4 will be explored in a full show in the new year so it may be worth snagging your copy now!

The MacUpdate Holiday Bundle segment of the show has not been sponsored or endorsed by any of the software vendors or MacUpdate but you can show your support for ScreenCastsOnline by using the special ScreenCastsOnline affiliate link - ScreenCastsOnline.com/mupromo

SCO0175 - Working with Large Monitors (and Small!)

nov2008
Actually, the title of this weeks show is a little misleading! Yes, the utilities featured in this weeks show will make using a large screen monitor easier, but they also will assist you on smaller monitors and even laptops. This show covers various utilities that can help you with managing how you move your cursor and your windows on screen. The utilities help you speed up your workflow by giving you some extra control over and above how OSX is designed to work delivering a much more efficient way of working (especially if you do use a large monitor).

For viewers of the free feed, I've included a full segment from the Extra! members only show as a taster but also to see if we can boost the sales of this particular app, for reasons that will become apparent as you watch the clip.

In this weeks full Extra! members only show I cover:
My Mouse Recommendations - A quick look at my Mice of choice - The Logitech MX Revolution Mouse and the VX Nano Mouse. I also give you a demonstration of the benefits of the dual function scroll and flywheel mechanism.

Links: Logitech MX Revolution Wireless Laser Mouse
Logitech VX Nano Cordless Laser Mouse for Notebooks
Logitech
SteerMouse - A fully featured advanced driver for USB and Bluetooth mouse. SteerMouse allows to to fully program a wide variety of Mice and I show you my most favourite feature - a way to make your mouse pointer zoom across the screen automatically and land dead center on the default button of dialog boxes - no wrist movement required!

Link: SteerMouse Website
SteerMouse TOP
DejaMenu - A real boon for large screen or multiple monitor setups. You know how OSX arranges the Application menu bar across the top of the primary display? Well it can be a real pain constantly moving the mouse pointer from the left, right or bottom of the screen all the way to the top. And when your application window is on a separate monitor from the application menu bar - grrrr! Well DejaMenu is a free utility that comes to the rescue by allowing you to assign a key combination to pop up the application menu right under your mouse pointer - no matter where it's located on the screen. In the show I also show you how easy it is to remap the DejaMenu key combo to a single mouse button using SteerMouse.

Link: DejaMenu Website
DejaMenu 1.2.2 for MacOS X
MercuryMover - (This full segment is included in this weeks sampler version of the show and available for free) Whilst all these tips assist you using your mouse, true power users know that the keyboard is the way to go to speed up your workflow. On any Mac, constantly moving and resizing windows using the mouse can be a real time drain. The constant moving from keyboard to mouse and back again can add seconds to your workflow that over the space of a day, a week and a year, can waste an extraordinary amount of time.

So wouldn't it be great to be able to resize and move windows directly from the keyboard with a couple of simple keystrokes?

Well you can using MercuryMover! This simple but effective application allows your to move and resize windows by 1 pixel, 10 pixels or 100 pixels at a time and will also allow you to move or resize to the edge of the screen. You can even center or maximise your selected window with a single keypress. As well as these built in shortcuts, MercuryMover also allows you to save custom keyboard shortcuts that will allow you to save the size, position or both for any window on screen. Do you always want Safari to be the same size and position when you use it? Well you can reapply a saved setting via MercuryMover and resize and repostition the window everytime with pixel point accuracy.

MercuryMover is currently available at a reduced price but ScreenCastsOnline viewers can get an additional 10% off by visiting a special store page. With each copy of MercuryMover sold, $2 of the purchase price will be donated to the National Cancer Coalition

SCO0173 - Mac Hints & Tips Montage - 03 [Extra! members only]

oct2008
Another Mac Montage this week! A couple of tips I use every week to create the show and associated supporting documents and graphics along with a great way to personalise your emails, together with a look at an OSX application.

This weeks tips in detail are:

Finding and capturing HiRes Icons in OS X: Now that Leopard supports huge 512x512 icons, application designers have gone to town, creating beautiful HiRes icons for all of your favourite applications. Not only that, but Apples own designers have created many, many beautiful HiRes icons for folders, software and even Apple hardware devices. This tip will show you how to find them on your system, copy them safely and create your own transparent png graphics for use in graphic projects and presentations - all for free. The tip also includes a handy little trick for capturing those gorgeous 512x512 icons from third party applications too! preview
Creating eMail Stationery Templates: Another new feature in Leopard was the inclusion of full colour HTML based email templates to brighten up your emails. Whilst, the pre-built templates are all very nice (!) wouldn't it be great to design your own personalised eMail templates for personal or business use? Well this tip shows you how to do just that! By examining an existing email template, this tip steps you through the structure of the template and shows your how to amend the template to suit your needs, then save it as a custom template. mail
Using The OS X Dictionary: he dictionary has been around for a while, but has been greatly expanded in Leopard to allow you direct access to a Thesaurus, and Apple dictionary and even direct access to Wikipedia. This tip also shows you a simple keyboard shortcut that allows you to look up words in any Cocoa app without having to load the full dictionary application - very cool! dictionary
Capturing Single Frames in Quicktime Movies: This simple tip shows you how to capture a single frame in a Quicktime movie and export it to png or jpeg format. As promised, the second of an occasional series of various hints and tips on getting the most out of your mac. Instead of the show focussing on a single piece of software or subject, I mix it up with several unrelated hints and tips on various aspects of using a mac. Each tip is directly accessible via chapter marks so you can either watch all the tips in sequence or jump straight to the tip you'd like.

SCO0169 - Mac Hints & Tips Montage - 02 [Extra! members only]

oct2008
As promised, the second of an occasional series of various hints and tips on getting the most out of your mac. Instead of the show focussing on a single piece of software or subject, I mix it up with several unrelated hints and tips on various aspects of using a mac. Each tip is directly accessible via chapter marks so you can either watch all the tips in sequence or jump straight to the tip you'd like.

This week, the tips include:

Numbers and OS X: Easily set up OS X keyboard shortcuts to access your most commonly used menu items. I found a few frustrations in switching over from Excel in that my normal keyboard shortcuts were not available in Numbers. A few clicks later and I was able to replicate them in Numbers and boost my productivity at a stroke! The really neat thing is that you can use the same technique for creating your own customised keyboard shortcuts in all your favourite applications.
Numbers
Numbers: Another frustration was the absence of the Excel command for "Convert to Columns" to convert imported CSV files. Whenever I imported CSV (Comma Separated Variable) files, they didn't format properly! The answer was blindingly obvious and you'll kick yourself if this has been tripping you up too. All is revealed in this weeks show.
Numbers
Safari: Despite all the choices we have as mac users with a plethora of browsers, I still keep coming back to Safari as my browser of choice. It's fast, fully compliant and integrates fully with the iPhone. Safari also has some pretty nifty features on how it handles tabs, windows and bookmarks including integration with address book. This section alone gives half a dozen tips on getting the most out of Safari
safari
iTunes: Following on from the recent show covering iTunes 8, another feature is the inclusion of artwork for Genres in Album view. It can get a bit messy when you have none standard genres and no artwork. This tip shows you how to access a free utility to manage and update your iTunes genres artwork plus gives you access to some free genre artwork via Flickr.
itunes
OS X, Launchbar, Google Translate: This tip allows you to set up your mac to do virtually instant translation of foreign language text snippets. Frustrated by not being able to follow my non English speaking friends on Twitter, this tip shows you how to use Launchbar and the Google Translate service to quickly and easily translate virtually any language to any other language using a few simple keystrokes. Even if you're not a Launchbar user, you can still utilise copy and paste and the Google Translate service to accomplish this but not as impressively!

SCO0165 - Mac Hints & Tips Montage - 01 [Extra! members only]

Something different for this week - a montage of Mac hints and tips!

As you're probably aware, the show usually focuses on one particular topic or subject area but in doing that, lots of smaller topics get overlooked. So this week I cover 4 completely different topics that wouldn't justify a full show individually but should still help you get the most out of your Mac. This weeks mini tutorials are:
pdf-logo

Create a new Web Receipts option - OSX has a built in feature that allows you to use the print menu in any application to save your print to a PDF. They even provide a special option to save your PDF to a "Web Receipts" folder in your documents folder. This section allows you to duplicate this feature and create your own "Web Receipts" folder, call it anything you want and save it anywhere you want. The tutorial also shows you how to edit your new menu option to insert a time stamp right into the PDF title.

Connectwaves_20070109

Sharing Your Internet Connection - Did you know that if you have a Mac with an Airport card or built in Airport, that you can turn you Mac in to an Internet access point by sharing your wired Internet connection? I use this a lot to allow my iPhone to use Wifi in my home studio where 3G is non existent and my existing wifi router signal is very weak. A couple of clicks in System Preferences and even if you don't have a wifi router, you can switch on Wifi and use your Mac as a Wireless Access Point.

CoreServices

Tweaking Screen Sharing - We all know that you can start off a screen sharing session using the button in the finder but did you know that there is a standalone screen sharing app built right into OSX? This section exposes the underlying app and gives you instructions on reconfiguring it to see all your bonjour enabled machines. It also shows you a tip on making the standard screensharing window much more functional by unhiding some extra features and buttons in the toolbar.

Utilities

Creating Disk Images using Disk Utility - Yes, we all use Disk Utility to examine our disks and repair permissions, but did you know you can create your own disk images to send to other mac users, swap data from mac to mac or even burn to CD or DVD. As well as standard disk images, you can even create secure, password protected, encrypted disk images to store your sensitive data on your disk away from prying eyes. In this section, I look at the basics of disk images, creating a secure disk image and explain some of the different file formats available to you. I also look at how disk images can help us store sensitive data on USB pen drives.

So lots to cover in this weeks show!

If you want to copy and paste some of the commands I used in this weeks show, you can download a text file containing the commands from here

The website I got the Web Receipts info from is here

Peter Maurer is a name familiar to many Mac users, as the original creator of Textpander (re-launched as TextExpander by Smile on my Mac) as well as many other excellent Mac utilities we've touched on in previous episodes of ScreenCastsOnline (ServiceScrubber and Displaperture to name but a few!)

Peter has now turned his considerable talents to develop a brand new lightweight download manager - Leech

Leech was designed to be small yet powerful, with all the features you need to efficiently and quickly download files using full integration with the top OS X browsers - Safari, Camino, OmniWeb and FireFox (using the Flashgot plugin for FireFox).

With a simple yet elegant user interface, Leech was built from the ground up to be a great example of an OS X application.

In this weeks show, I take you through:
  • Leech Features
  • Installation and Configuration
  • Using Leech to download files
  • Creating and Using Leech Rules
  • Using Leech History
  • Camino and FireFox Integration
In addition, I also include details of a special ScreenCastsOnline discount code to get a 20% discount off the usual price of Leech, kindly supplied by Many Tricks, the sponsors of this weeks episode.

There is an additional discount available for users of other download managers who might want to purchase Leech. Just send proof of purchase of the other download manager to info@manytricks.com for futher information on obtaining the additional discount.

SCO0147 - JumpCut, DejaMenu & SoundSource [Extra Only]

Something different this week, not one but three really useful utilities.

What's even better is that they are all free!
JumpCut - A great clipboard buffering application which takes a minimilistic approach to give you access to your recent clipboard entries. Go back in time and select from a list of recent clips from either your menu bar or via a hot key and bezel - Website Link Jumpcut_ Minimalist Clipboard Buffering for OS X
DejaMenu - Large or multiscreen setup? Fed up of having to travel all the way to the top of the screen to access your applications menu? Or even worse, having to traverse monitors to get access? DejaMenu allows you configure every applications menu to pop up right where your cursor is, saving you effort and time. You can even assign your menus to popup with a click of your mouse! - Website Link DejaMenu 1.2.2 for MacOS X
SoundSource - Constantly juggling different audio outputs and inputs on your Mac? SoundSource gives you access to all your audio devices quickly and easily through a single icon in your menu bar as well as a volume control for each device - Website Link Rogue Amoeba - Freebies
In addition, the members version of this weeks show has a special section just for members which explains the renewal process and what to do to prevent your membership expiring, and what to do if it does!
