    iTunes Match on the Mac

iTunes Match is Apple's unique service that allows you to access your iTunes music collection in the cloud, from any supported device - Mac, iOS or Apple TV.

This tutorial takes you through the intricacies of setting up your iTunes music collection with iTunes Match.

    Duration: 43:08 Tutor: Don McAllister
  • iTunes Match on the Mac Description

iTunes Match is Apple's unique service that allows you to access your iTunes music collection in the cloud, from any supported device - Mac, iOS or Apple TV.

It does this by analysing your existing music collection in iTunes, and seeing which tracks you have, match the tracks held online in Apple's huge iTunes library. If it finds a match (and some other criteria are met), Apple will allow you to access those matched tracks, without having to upload your music. If it can't find a match for a track, it will upload just those unmatched tracks.

Once the matching and uploading process is finished, you can then access all the tracks from up to 10 devices.

Even better, the matched tracks are available in DRM free, 256kbps versions, regardless of the bitrate of the original version. You can even delete the originals, and re-download the higher bit rate tracks, provided you've taken the necessary precautions of course!

This tutorial takes you through the intricacies of setting up your iTunes music collection with iTunes Match, walking you through the entire process, as well as guiding you in the preparation of your music library, before you even start the iTunes Match process. You can save yourself hours of matching and upload times and bandwidth, by following some simple guidelines in advance.

Despite your best efforts, the matching process is most likely to throw up some anomalies, resulting in mismatches and incorrectly uploaded files. The tutorial takes you through the process of troubleshooting and gives you some tips on how to rectify problems.

The tutorial also takes you through the process of analysing your matched music collection, and gives you simple instructions on replacing all of your matched low bit rate music with iTunes Plus format songs.

    The full tutorial covers:

    • What is iTunes Match?
    • Preparing for iTunes Match
    • System Requirements
    • De-Duplicating!
    • Consolidate Genres
    • Excluding Tracks from iTunes Match
    • Sanitising Comments
    • Running iTunes Match
    • Reviewing iTunes Match Results
    • Replacing Matched Tracks
    • Fixing Ineligible Tracks

Last show of the year so I thought I'd do something different.

This week I take you through the ScreenCastsOnline workflow, from preparation, through recording and editing, on to encoding and subtitles to final testing and publication. The whole process is fairly complex so I've broken it down into manageable chunks.

I'm hoping to streamline the publication side of things in the New Year with the launch of a new website based on a bespoke content management system, which should automate a lot of the manual processes involved in producing the RSS feeds and publishing to the websites. Once that is in place, I'll need to start looking at automating or outsourcing more of the video production work. But until then, take a look at how things are organised now and wonder how on earth I manage to produce a show every week - I know I do!

As it’s Christmas Eve next week, I’ve put together this double length show and won’t publish a show next week. So you can either watch this one right the way through and take a week off, or watch half and put the rest aside for next week. I’ve even put a marker in the show so you know when you’re half way through!

It’s a fairly mixed bag this week, with both Mac and iOS 4 content, and even a mini hardware review.

The show covers various topics including:

?Apple & Batteries A whole section on explaining battery terminology with a look at Apples old and new battery technology. I give you some hints and tips on prolonging your batteries life with some recommendations from Apple themselves.

?Wolfram Alpha A fantastic web service that’s so much more than just a search engine. You’ll be amazed at just how much you can do with Wolfram Alpha, from simple numerical expressions written as sentences, to highly complex mathematical equations. But it’s not just for mathematicians! There’s all sorts of information available to you via Wolfram Alpha.

?Removing Flash from OSX We’ve covered Click to Flash before, which was a way of disabling flash content on web pages. With the prevalence of web sites now offering alternative content to Flash, and with the availability of some new tools and utilities, it’s now possible to remove Flash completely from your Mac. That’s what Apple have done with the new MacBook Air! This section shows you how to do just that, and also gives you some tips and techniques on what to do if you do need to view Flash content, even if Flash isn’t installed.

?Reeder for Mac I don’t usually cover beta software, but this is one of the best RSS readers out there! We’ve covered Reeder for iOS before but the new version for the Mac is sublime, even in its beta form. Well recommended.

Playing Audio from your iOS device to your Mac With my recently adopted strategy of moving all my music off my laptop to my iPhone, I find there are times I want to listen to music via speakers rather then headphones. The speaker on the iPhone just doesn’t cut it! So why not use the speakers built into my laptop.

In this section, I look at three options -

(Update - Faceplant time! There’s one other option you could do that’s not included in this week’s show... Just load iTunes on the laptop and connect the iPhone. Even if the phone is not synced, you can still play music off the device via iTunes on the laptop - OK, so I’m not infallible)

?Line In A free software utility that allows you to plug your iPhone into your line in port and pass thru the audio to your Mac speakers - great unless you’ve got a MacBook Air (No line in port!)

?PhoneView - a utility that accesses your iPhone music library via a standard iPhone USB cable. Once connected, just play your music! PhoneView also does much more than just this!

Jambox - Of course, the optimum solution would be a set of highly portable speakers, connectable via bluetooth, with stunning sound quality! Lo and behold, the Jambox by Jawbone fits the bill. Whilst I can’t demonstrate the sound quality, I demonstrate how the device is setup to connect to an iPod touch via Bluetooth.

?NoteBook for iPad - To finish off this week’s extended show, I’ve included three short videos of the new Circus Ponies NoteBook for iPad application. NoteBook for Mac has previously be covered on the show and has proven to be immensely popular for people who like the paper notebook metaphor. Circus Ponies have done a stellar job porting it across to the iPad, where the paper notebook metaphor is perfect for the iPad form factor.

In detail, this week’s show covers...

    • Batteries & Optimisation
    • New Battery Technology
    • Checking your Battery Status
    • Apple Resources
    • Wolfram Alpha
    • Removing Flash From OSX
    • Reeder for Mac

  • Parallels, VMware & VirtualBox Description

It’s well known that you can run Windows on your Mac using Bootcamp on your Mac, as well as third party software solutions.

But did you know you can now run OSX on your Mac in a virtual machine! With Lion, Apple have relaxed the licensing arrangements and now you can run multiple instances of OSX on your Mac in Virtual Machines.

In this weeks tutorial, I take a look at three different virtualisation packages, all designed to allow you to run multiple operating systems on your Mac. Not just Windows, but MSDOS, Linux, OS/2 and many more, as well as Lion 10.7 Desktop and Server.

Ideal for testing, training, development to name but a few, your Mac can now host as many Operating Systems as your disk capacity can stretch too. Just don't try and run them all at the same time!

This week's show was prompted by a viewer email as well as the news that VMware had removed the imposed limitations of installing Snow Leopard desktop in a Virtual Machine. Great! So now people could upgrade to Lion and run any Snow Leopard dependant apps in a Virtual machine. A bit like when Apple included support for older Apps when OSX was introduced.

    Not so fast!

Whilst recording the show, it was announced that this was an error by VMware and they are going to remove that feature at the next update. Shame.

Regardless, I continued and left in a segment showing Snow Leopard desktop running in a VM on Lion - for posterity!

Regardless, there are still huge benefits to be had running virtual machines, so this show takes you through two commercial applications plus one free one!

Parallels Desktop for Mac, VMware Fusion and VirtualBox

The tutorial isn't meant to be an in-depth review of each application. It's intended to give you a look at all three applications and decide which one might be right for you. It focuses mainly on running Lion in a VM although I do touch on Windows.

  • Internet, Web and Xgrid Sharing Description

The final part of a number of shows, all looking at the different aspects of sharing on your Mac.

In this week's show, I take a look at Internet sharing, Web Sharing and Xgrid sharing, with demonstrations of all three.

Internet Sharing Ever been in a hotel room with just a wired ethernet connection but wanted to browse the web via your iPhone of iPad? Or a hotel with wired and Wifi Ethernet access but they insist on charging for every computer or device?

Well, if you have your Mac with you, you can connect the Mac to the wired ethernet connection and share your Internet connection with Internet Sharing. Ever wanted to control your laptop presentation using your iPhone but there's no WiFi connection?

Well, now you can by creating a computer to computer WiFi network just for you. Both these scenarios are covered in this section with step by step instructions.

Web Sharing Did you realise that every copy of Mac OSX has a fully featured zero configuration web server built in? It's really simple to create and publish web sites on your internal network, just with a few clicks.

This section shows you how to setup web sharing and more importantly, where to install the files and folder required once the web service is running. Using both iWeb and Rapidweaver as examples, the show demonstrates exactly how to export your websites locally.

If you want to be a bit more adventurous, this week's show also shows you how to install and run MAMP - a completely self contained web server running in isolation on your Mac.

As well as an Apache Web Server, MAMP also includes full PHP support and MySQL database support, all fully working in it's own environment. Great for testing or experimenting without the expense or complication of a separate server.

Xgrid Sharing Distributed computing for the rest of us! Xgrid is built into every copy of OSX and allows application developers to create truly distributed processing environments for heavy number crunching.

This section explains Xgrid and shows one example of an Internet wide Xgrid that you can connect to. In addition, as a demonstration of distributed computing, I also cover using Final Cut Studios Compressor and Qmaster to distribute video encoding jobs in a cluster of 16 processors - just for fun!

In detail, this week's members show covers:

    ◦ Internet Sharing
    ◦ Setting up a Computer to Computer Network
    ◦ Sharing your Internet Connection
    ◦ Web Sharing
    ◦ Publishing locally to your personal website with iWeb
    ◦ Publishing locally to your computer’s website with Rapidweaver
    ◦ MAMP Personal Web Server
    ◦ Xgrid Sharing
    ◦ Using OpenMacGrid
    ◦ Using Virtual Clusters in Compressor
