Special Edition - Scoble Show Interview

scobleshot
As mentioned last week, there's no normal (or Extra!) show this week due to the Holidays!

But I couldn't let a week go by without publishing something so I contacted Robert Scoble and asked if he would allow me to re-publish the video interview I did with him last month. He has graciously said yes so here it is.

I hope you enjoy it!

Don

PS The show is in the original resolution as published by the ScobleShow (470x280) as I don't have access to the source video to re-encode to HD or ED

PPS Have a great New Year!!

SCO0080 - WebYep - Simple CMS for Rapidweaver

webyep
CMS = Content Management System! Another amazing plugin in for Rapidweaver this week and that's WebYep from Objective Developments. Whilst Rapidweaver is a fantastic Website creation tool (the ScreenCastsOnline website is a Rapidweaver based site), there are times I wish I could update it without using the Rapidweaver client. And wouldn't it be cool if you could have pages that users could create and edit content on using a normal browser?

Well WebYep allows you to do just that!

Yes, that's right, create WebYep pages in any Rapidweaver site that allows an authorised user to update and edit from any browser.

This weeks show takes you from download to installation of the plugin, the creation and publication of a WebYep page, activation and configuration of WebYep on a hosted account and finally shows you just how easy it is to update a WebYep page!

SCO0079 - Mac & Windows File Sharing

filesharing
This weeks shows gives you some basic information on how to share folders and files either on the same mac, between macs on your home network and also between Macs and Windows PCs.

As an experiment, the show is split into 3 sections:

Part 1 - For Everyone - Basic Filesharing
Part 2 - For Extra! Members - Using Sharepoints and more advanced file sharing
Part 3 - For Extra! Members - A short section covering the recent beta release of Parallels introducing some amazing new features.

Parts 2 & 3 are only available in the versions of the Extra! versions of the shows (in High definition) made available via the RSS feeds for Extra! members. Slight change this week in that the Extra! membership has been simplified to just 1 option - Premium Extra! Membership. See here for details.

Part 2 also includes information on installing and configuring Sharepoints - A great donationware application that makes the whole process of setting up File Sharing Only users and shares on the mac.

SCO0078 - 1Passwd - Secure Login & Password Management

1passwd
Another indispensable Mac application this week to help you manage your Internet logins and passwords securely. I don't know about you but I have so many logins and passwords for the various web services I subscribe to, that it has become a major effort to keep them all in check. The easy option is to use simple passwords or even to use the same password for different services but this is really dangerous if your password gets compromised. Mix in the multitude of browsers we also have available to us and things get very complicated.

This week, I look at 1Passwd from Agile Web Solutions. This is a fantastic application that allows you to manage all your Internet logins and passwords using a single master password, securely encrypted in a special keychain. What's really cool is that this is integrated across most (all?) of the major Mac browsers enabling you to switch between browsers and still have access to all your logins and passwords. What's even better is that it's integrated with .Mac so you can backup all your logins and passwords using .Mac and even sync them to multiple machines.

1Passwd also has an automatic form filler built in that allows you to complete web forms with a single click - It even has the ability for you to store multiple "Personalities" that con hold different types of information to allow you to pick the right set of information for the required form.

This is all accomplished very easily, so checkout the screencast for information on installing, configuring and using 1Passwd.

SCO0077 - Kinkless GTD - Extra! Only Show

kinklesslogo
This weeks show is for Extra! members only, and covers a unique application which is really a series of free Applescripts that help you implement David Allens "Getting Things Done" (GTD) productivity methodology. What's unique about this implementation is that these scripts are fully integrated with OmniOutliner Pro, iCal and QuickSilver and together make a seamless and powerful organisational tool.

The scripts were developed by Ethan Schoonover and he has released them as the Kinkless GTD package or KGTD which are available for free download from his site.

David Allens GTD system is a well established productivity methodology, and I'd really recommend getting a hold of the GTD book to understand some of the basic principles. There are some pretty powerful and effective techniques in there for getting hold of all the stuff we normally juggle in our heads which stress us out, and depositing that stuff into a tried and trusted system where we can more effectively process the required actions to get things running smoothly.

I did mention I'd put a link to the GTD book and I've had a few emails reminding me so here you go:

SCO0076 - Google - Part 1 - Accounts, Home Page & Search History

google logo
We've looked at Google applications before, most recently Google Reader, but with the ever increasing avalanche of Google Apps being released I though we'd start from scratch and have a more structured approach at examining Google. Consequently this week is all about creating a Google Account, configuring your personalised Home Page and looking at setting up and using your personal search history.

Of course, as these are web based services, this screencast is cross platform and is suitable for mac, PC and Linux users. However, with the inclusion of the Google CEO on the Apple board and the ongoing rumours of enhanced Apple/Google integration, it might be worth Mac users taking a special interest in Google!

SCO0075 - SpamSieve - eMail Spam Filtering

spamsieve-icon
One of the ongoing problems of email is the ever increasing deluge of spam flooding into our inboxes. Spam has elevated itself past just a nuisance to a real business and even parental problem. Spammers are constantly becoming more sophisticated and using new techniques to bypass traditional spam filtering. This weeks show covers a client side tool which actually learns all about incoming spam and becomes more effective the longer it is used, foiling the vast majority of spam and giving you unprecedented control of your email.

The application is SpamSieve by C-Command software.

Whilst extremely effective in operation, the installation and configuration of SpamSieve may be considered difficult to some people, but that's where the beauty of the screencast steps in and takes you through some of the basic concepts and the entire installation process step by step.

For Extra! members, this weeks show contains an additional 10 minutes Extra! section looking in more detail at some of the configuration options and preferences.

The full show is also available automatically to ScreenCastsOnline Premium Extra! members in high definition as part of the membership package along with an addition 8 Extra! member only shows (not released in the free version) available for immediate download - over 3.5 hours additional content - See here for details

SCO0074 - Configuring OSX Mail to use Hosted Mail

mailicon
Following on from the recent show (SCO0071 - Using an Internet Hosting Provider) I'm pleased to say that ScreenCastsOnline viewers have been setting up SiteGround accounts using the ScreenCastsOnline Affiliate Link!

Thank you!

This will be the last SiteGround related show for a month or two, but people have been asking about setting up the email system with OSX Mail application. So this show teaches you how to create email accounts in Siteground and configuring your mail in OSX. As this is a fairly standard procedure, you may fins that this is applicable to other hosting providers too! The show also covers some great tips on organising your mail accounts. So this week we look at:

Setting up single and multiple email accounts in Siteground
Configuring the OSX Mail Application
Forwarding multiple emails to single mailbox
Configuring multiple emails in a single mailbox
Organising your emails using Rules
SiteGround WebMail

SCO0073 - iWeb - Extra! Only Show

life06
Another Extra! only show this week and I complete the series on iLife 06 by covering iWeb.

iWeb is a very simple, template based, web creation tool which allows you to produce stunning results with very little effort.

I haven't given up on Rapidweaver as my web creation tool of choice but for someone looking to put together a very attractive website with the minimum of effort, iWeb could be just the job!

What is impressive is the amazing integration between iWeb and all the other iLife O6 applications. So rather than just look at the basics of iWeb, this screencast shows you how to publish enhanced and video podcasts with iWeb using iTunes, Garageband, iPhoto and iMovie HD. All these applications have their own screencasts available just look at the iLife 06 category iLife 06 categoryon the ScreenCastsOnline website.

Following on from the recent SiteGround episode, this show revisits publishing your iWeb website to a third party hosting provider.

SCO0072 - FileChute & ImageWell

filechutelogo
Following on from last week we look at some other great applications that enable you to make the best use of your Internet Hosting Account.

This time we look at FileChute by Yellow Mug software. FileChute is a really simple application that allows you to easily upload large files to your FTP account and automatically create email links. This weeks screencast also features a step by step installation guide using ScreenCastsOnlines affiliated hosting provider SiteGround. Well, you've got 40GB of diskspace available with a SiteGround account so you may as well use it!

We also look at using a really handy feature in SiteGround using cPanel to restrict directory access so you can add an extra layer of security on your FileChute service (if required).

imagewell
ScreenCastsOnline Extra! members have an Extra! section this week, where we revisit an old favourite, Imagewell. This is a free application that's really great for resizing and annotating JPGs.

Imagewell has a built in FTP function which allows you to easily publish images to your hosting account on the web. Another neat feature is it automatically creates one of four different types of links in your clipboard allowing you to paste the image URL to a variety of forums or websites. This section is only included in the HD resolutions made available automatically to ScreenCastsOnline Extra! members. To learn more about becoming a member, check out this link.

This show builds heavily on my experiences with setting up ScreenCastsOnline to use a third party hosting provider (SiteGround)to host my website, forum and membership system. I've been a happy SiteGround customer for 12 months and thought it would be useful to people to see what goes on under the covers when using SiteGround as a hosting provider. They do a great job with ScreenCastsOnline and their prices and service are second to none so I have no hesitation in giving them a personal endorsement!

SCO0071 - Using an Internet Hosting Provider - SiteGround

siteground logo
Another popular request is addressed this week. How to configure an internet hosting account and how to use it to publish iWeb and Rapidweaver web sites. We also look at setting up FTP accounts and FTP clients to give you access to oodles of low cost storage.

This show builds heavily on my experiences with setting up ScreenCastsOnline to use a third party hosting provider (SiteGround)to host my website, forum and membership system. No Extra! section this week, it's a full show for everyone but ScreenCastsOnline Extra! members still get the show in HD (1280x720) or ED (960x540) whilst the free version is only 640x360.

SCO0070 - Google Reader

googlelogo
Google Reader is a web based RSS reader and yet another part of Googles quest for world domination!

The first version of Google Reader really wasn't much to write home about and the latest version also didn't immediately strike a chord with me. After dismissing it, I read various blog posts raving about the latest version (Scoble included) so I thought I'd better re-visit it.

I'm I glad I did as it is worthy of closer examination, in fact, it's brilliant and has taken over as my RSS reader of choice which I'd never thought anything would (being a happy NetNewsWire user).

So this episode is all about Google Reader V2.0 and takes you through the basics and some more advanced stuff. This week also has an Extra! section just for Extra! members only. The Extra! section covers:

Starred Items
Sharing your Posts
Built-in Link Blog
Goodies
Adding to Google Personalised page
Exporting Subs from NetNewsWire
Importing OPML Files
Managing Large Sub Lists

SCO0068 - OmniOutliner - Part 2

omnioutliner3
This week complete our two part series on the at premier Mac application - OmniOutliner from the Omni Group.

The second part of this screencast delves into some additional features available in the standard version of Omnioutliner and also looks at the enhanced facilities available in the Pro version.

This must be one of the most requested screencasts from ScreenCastsOnline viewers mainly due to the fact that the power of the application isn't immediately apparent when first trying the application. If you've bought an Intel Mac you may be suprised to learn that you've already got a copy of OmniOutliner installed as it comes pre-installed on all new Intel macs.

If you haven't got an Intel Mac, then never fear as the Omni Group have supplied ScreenCastsOnline with a special 40% discount coupon code against all versions of OmniOutliner! Details are in the screencast.

As this edition of ScreenCastsOnline has been sponsored by the Omni Group, it is being released into the free feed at a much higher resolution than normal at 960x540. ScreenCastsOnline Extra! members usually only get this resolution but they also get a higher resolution again of 1280x720. If you want to get the higher resolution versions of the full show (and some other goodies), you need to sign up as a ScreenCastsOnline Extra! member.

SCO0067 - OmniOutliner - Part 1

SCO0065 - SpyMe and HamachiX - Remote Control - Extra! Only Show

hamachispyme
Another Extra! members only show this week, but I've included a special taster version in the free feed.

Well we've all been there, your friend or relative is having some issues with their mac and you just know that if you could spend a few minutes on the machine you'd have it sorted in minutes! The only problem being that the mac is several hundred miles away!

This weeks show gives you a view on a simple solution for just this scenario and shows you an inexpensive product which allows you to remotely access and control a mac, together with another application which is free and allows you to setup a secure virtual private network (or VPN) across the Internet even traversing firewalls and eliminating problems with NAT.

The two applications are SpyMe and Hamachi - In fact, we also look at HamachiX which is an unofficial graphical front end for Hamachi on OSX.

The free show is in the the usual Desktop and iPod format of 640x360 so if you want to get the higher resolution versions of the full show, you need to sign up as a ScreenCastsOnline Extra! member.

This screencast shows you how to do all this by utilising the amazing new EyeTV 2 software from Elgato Systems

In the show I also demonstrate the new EyeTV for DTT device just launched by Elgato in Europe. It's basically a Freeview tuner that's the size of a memory stick and plugs straight into your USB2.0 port, turning your mac into a powerful PVR.

Even better is that we're giving one away as a competition prize (kindly donated by Elgato Systems)

No Extra! section this week as the show is sponsored by Elgato Systems. As it's a sponsored show, I'm releasing it in high resolution (960x600) to the free feed but Extra! members will still have access to the extreme high resolution version of 1280x800.

SCO0057 - Flock Web 2.0 Browser

flocklogo
I'm really excited about this application as it provides amazing functionality as standard.

It's Flock Beta 1 which I had a chance to play with over the weekend. I was so impressed I just had to do a screencast to spread the "Flock goodness" around.

Flock is an astounding browser built on FireFox and features integration with...

* Delicious & Shadows - for social bookmarking
* Flickr & Photobucket - for photo sharing
* Blogging - Has a built in blogging tool for virtually any blog tool
* RSS Reader - Fully featured RSS reader

It's available for Mac OSX, Windows and Linux and is a must try application.

Highly recommended! If you want to checkout the "My Own Reality" blog featured in the screencast, here's the link

Note: I've purposefully included the higher resolution Enhanced Desktop version in this weeks free feed. If you like it you can get this resolution every week (and an even higher resolution) by becoming a ScreenCastsOnline Extra! member!
