What is ScreenCastsOnline?
ScreenCastsOnline is a weekly
video podcast of computer based video
tutorials. The video tutorials cover many
different topics from week to week but
predominantly cover mac related subjects
together with the latest web based
services, so there are plenty of shows
for both mac and windows users.
The video tutorials are in the form of "screencasts" which are basically videos of screen captures demonstrating a particular application or service, with a spoken commentary explaining what is happening on screen. It's a really easy way to learn all about new applications and how to get the most out of your Mac.
ScreenCastsOnline is unique in that it is one of the very few non-US centric mac based podcasts! It's hosted by myself (Don McAllister) out of the UK and I also do all the show and website production. The show has been running since August 2005 and to date has produced over 100+ screencasts.
What you may not realise is that ScreenCastsOnline is actually my full time job and I was one of the first podcasters to leave my day job to go it alone. As well as the free shows each week, I also run a membership scheme called ScreenCastsOnline Extra! which provides my income from the show. You might want to check out all the Extra! goodies you get from a membership here!
In the meantime, please join the free feed and see what ScreenCastsOnline is all about!

Do I need an iPod to watch?
No!
ScreenCastsOnline shows are recorded in Apples popular Quicktime format and will play both on Windows and Mac computers. You can use either iTunes or Democracy Player or any other video player that supports Quicktime to play the shows.
You can even play them directly from the ScreenCastsOnline site by going to the "Most Recent Shows" page and clicking on the "Watch Show Now" link on each show. This will cause a popup window to appear and start streaming the show to your computer.

How do I know when a new show is available?
ScreenCastsOnline is published on a
weekly basis! Yes, that's a brand new
free show every week!
Each weekly show is usually published on a Friday but the great thing is that because it's a podcast, it can be sent to you automatically as soon as it is available, you don't have to do a thing!
To set this up, all you need to do is setup an automatic "bookmark" in iTunes or Democracy Player to register for the free show.
Setting up is very simple and is a one-off process....
Just click on either this link for iTunes or this link for Democracy player and you'll have instant access to the current show, the last six months worth of free shows and each new show as it's published each week, all for free! No forms to fill in, no details to give, just 1 click and you're done. (If you have another video podcast client you'd like to use such as ANT, etc, just copy this link into your podcatcher)

Can I watch ScreenCastsOnline on Windows?
Yes!
Although the show is produced on a Mac and features mostly Mac related shows, you can subscribe to the show and watch via iTunes or Democracy player on the Windows platform.
Don't forget, you can also watch the most recent shows directly from this site in your browser. Just click on the button at the foot of each show description on the Tutorials Page.
It's a much better experience subscribing in iTunes though!

What's that spotlight effect you use to highlight the screen?
That's Mousepose by Boinx
Software. It used to be free but
now they've enhanced it and charge
for it.
The spotlight effect is done in real time during the recording process.

What software do you use to create the screencasts?
Obviously, I use all Mac software to
create the ScreenCastsOnline shows.
Recently I switched over to ScreenFlow to capture the Audio and screen video in real time. I also now use Screenflow to put the first assembly edit of the show together and use some the the zooming and panning and other neat features of ScreenFlow.
Once the first edit is completed, I export all the movie files from ScreenFlow in Quicktime format and create the final version of the show using Final Cut Pro and Motion for the graphics. Finally, I use Compressor to convert the master versions of the show into the different resolutions available for both free and member downloads.
I also use Feeder extensively for creating my RSS feeds.
The media files for the podcasts are hosted by Libsyn and my website and forums are hosted by SiteGround.
