Apple have released Mountain Lion Server as a simple add on to Mountain Lion, for the incredible price of just $19.99. But is it of any use to home users?
In this week's show, Todd Olthoff demonstrates setting up Mountain Lion Server and explores some of the typical features uses that home users might benefit from.
Very much an introduction to a potentially complex and powerful application, this week's show covers some considerations for setting up Mountain Lion Server and well as some common tasks for setting up network users and groups. Todd also looks at File Sharing and using Mountain Lion server to set up a centralised Time Machine backup.

As always Don, your shows are great. I was particularly interested in show 0375 Mountain Lion Server. I have a Mac mini server, but have not had the time to read the docs and set it up properly. This show was such a time saver for me. I would like to see VPN, mail, and Airport admin covered in this series. Thanks to Todd also for his great presentation. David
Thanks David! Glad the timing was just right!
Very interesting show. I look forward to more on Mountain Lion Server.
Thanks Christo! Glad you enjoyed it:).
A nice whirlwind tour of the Server app Todd, thank you. I would like to learn more about setting up calendars, mail client and also how to manage software updates for all the client machines.
If I can offer one bit of contructive feedback, it would be to slow down just a tad…to give us time to absorb the stuff.
Thanks again!
JF, Thanks so much for the constructive feedback. Pace is something I am still working on. Also thanks for the suggestions for what to cover in the future!
I have just purchase a mini server with mountain lion , and found more videos from Todd on YouTube with much more details
Thank you very very very much!!
Thank you Gill! Congrats on the new Mini Server. You'll love it:).
Great show but I wish it hadn't stop short of VPN with iOS devices. I just bought Server for the primary purpose of setting up VPN while I go on an international trip in two weeks. I'll look for Todd's YouTube videos. Hopefully, there will be some clues there on how to get this set up. Thanks!
Thanks John! Hopefully you found what you needed for your trip. If you get stuck feel free to leave a comment.
Todd has done a great job on all his episodes—pleasant speaking voice, good pace, excellent content. I would really like to hear more about Server.
Thanks Mark! I really appreciate the feedback:).
Thanks Todd, excellent tutorial. I do hope you produce more Server shows, especially focusing on VPN, and the home sharing of calendars and contacts. I also would like more info on using an iPad with the Server, and a discussion of using the Server software simultaneously with the Mountain Lion client on the same Mac mini. Thanks.
Bob, Thanks for the feedback and suggestions. What specifically would you like to know about using the server software with the client software?
Enjoyed the show Todd. You gave a good grounding for installing Server. If more screencasts are scheduled, would you do a bit on just why one would want a server in the home for the family. I see the TimeMachine connection and wonder in what other areas a server would help the families computer experience.
Thanks
Thank Joe! Great suggestion on talking more about why someone would want a server in the home. We should be able to do more of that in the future. Thanks again for the suggestion:).
Great show, Todd. Like to see more Server shows soon. iOS, VPN and Mail plus more on filesharing. Keep up the good work
Thanks for the feedback Pal! All the things you mentioned are some of the benefits of server. Mail is a little tricky for home users due to some of the ISP restrictions and monitoring that is required but it can be done:). Thanks again!
Great show Todd! I look forward to many more tutorials on the Server. I have been meaning to set one up for a long time for my family. The need is even more pressing now that I am running a home business.
Thanks Bruno! Glad you enjoyed it and the timing is right:). Server is perfect for a home business depending on your needs.
This is a truly great show. Loving Todd's screencasts. Very clear. I hope we get more server casts from Todd. This is brilliant, and I would like to have more before trying out server for myself.
Thank Nicholas! I really appreciate the feedback and kind remarks:).
Awaiting for part 2 in anticipation ...
Would really like to see more on using for sharing contacts with my wife. Can we use this to have only one contacts list?
Wesson, Thanks for the suggestion. You can use one contacts list and calendar. We'll probably be covering that soon:).
Todd,
Do you have any insight on updgrading from Lion Server? I have a real domain and use Lion Server for mail and web services.
Wesson, I did cover upgrading on Youtube if you search for upgrade to Mountain Lion Server & my name you should see a walkthrough. Hope that helps:).
Excellent
Glad you enjoyed the tutorial Charanjit:).
In setting up home folders. If a user has a local home folder and you create a new share for a network home folder, will it move the existing local home folder data into the newly created network home folder or is this a manual process?
