Automattic's Day One is a long-standing journaling app that has stood as a benchmark over the years as other similar apps have come and gone. Over the years it has continued to be updated with terrific additions like Shortcuts integration, several export options, dictating of entries on Apple Watch, and Shared Journals. In this video created on iPad, Darcy recaps the basics of creating new entries and adding all forms of data like text, photos, video, audio and documents. He then covers some of these new additions, and wraps up the show by creating two useful shortcuts.
Day One runs on iOS 17 or later, macOS 14 or later, and visionOS 1.0 or newer.

Darcy - Could you elaborate on any differences between a subscription through the Apple App Store versus a subscription directly with the Day One author?

I've had a quick check - whilst I of course advocate going through the developer directly to help support them so they don't have to pay the 15 or 30% App Store fee (dependant on number of downloads) - I can't see an option to subscribe to them directly through the site? there is a web-app and when I sign in to that, and go into my Settings, i cannot upgrade my legacy plan I have (whereas I can on iOS)
If you can find a method, would love to hear about it!

Hey Kurt, sorry for taking time to get back to you and thanks to Lee for stepping in. There is actually a way to subscribe on the website itself by clicking the ‘Premium’ tab and selecting ‘Buy Premium’ which is next to a ‘View Pricing’ button. For me this takes me to a login page and jointly shows me the US pricing for a yearly subscription. Let me know how you go!
Lee and Darcy - Thank you for the responses. Unfortunately, this does not answer my question. Perhaps I should clarify, if a user does subscribe through Apple, what difference is there as opposed to someone who subscribes directly through the developer's website. It seems as though one might be able to have some iCloud integration that is not offered through the developer's website. Also, it seems that the Android app offers storage with Google Drive. (I understand Android is not the focus of SCO.) iOS offers storage with iCloud. macOS offers storage locally and possibly other? I would like to know if a user can store the repository for Day One on an external drive of a Mac versus taking up valuable primary storage drive space.
Hey Kurt, regarding differences between subscribing through the App Store and through the developer/website directly I can’t easily find a difference in features. From what I can tell an active subscription from either of those two avenues or the Play Store links with your Day One account, giving you access across the board.
Regarding local storage to an external drive, I’m not 100% sure this can be achieved. I recommend starting the premium trial and using this link (https://dayone.me/support) to contact Day One directly about guidance on this method.
