Tutorial Description

It's time to get a little geeky! When it comes to using Mail daily, lots of tasks can become repetitive and whilst it may not seem like a lot of time is wasted on these actions, when you add up the time involved, it soon builds up. Now lots of these tasks can be automated with a little bit of AppleScript and in this video, Lee walks you through three simple examples that will help create new message templates, download files to a specific location as well as move messages and change their flagged and read status.

You can also download the text files Lee uses as examples, from the link below.

This video covers:

  • Setting the Script Location
  • Creating an Email Template
  • Running Scripts from the Menu Bar
  • Creating a Script for Downloading Attachments
  • Creating a Script to Move Messages

You are so right, with Chat GPT or other AI service it becomes much more accessible for non-programmers to create helper scripts just like these. I would love to see more content like this as it stimulates me to do more. Thanks!

No problem Fernando - I'm far form being a programmer, however I know enough to query ChatGPT and use it to help educate on smaller scale things - definitely want to include more of this in videos moving forward, just wanted to see how this one landed.

Lee I'm loving your new video's inclusion of some easier Terminal commands and scripting. There is very little 'intro' content on Applescripts, as much of the free introductory material (such as macosxautomation.com) is so antiquated, that it feels like 'one has to know what they're doing already, to actually learn to do what one wants to do'. ie learning it is just as convoluted an incomprehensible as that sentence i just wrote. (also FYI, that the third script in the zipped text files you provide , doesn't match the 3rd script in hte video, but its easy enough to follow nevertheless) Again, Loving the new content, and i can easily adapt these three scripts into some very useful everyday tools. Thanks so much

Thanks for this, I was in two minds about whether to do an AppleScript one as you rightly say - there isn't much beginner content out there, however with AI to help us in building them, I feel the time is right to start touching on them in a few videos to add a little more value. You'll see a little more in the DEVONthink 4 video I'm currently recording, as there is a built-in assistant there to help make your own scripts - so it's definitely getting easier for ANYONE to start using them.
