Tutorial Description

DEVONthink is one of the most powerful database applications made for the Mac. In fact, some people have said this one application makes it worth getting a Mac just to run it!

In the second of this three-part foundation tutorial, Todd covers the many ways you can view your database and goes over setting up workspaces. He also shows you how to work with the rich metadata that you can assign to your files inside of DEVONthink, then goes over how you can use groups and tags as a way to organise the information inside your databases.

The full tutorial covers

  • Setting Up Views
  • Using Workspaces
  • Info Inspector
  • Annotations & Reminders Inspector
  • Content & Documents Inspectors
  • Organizing Your Databases with Groups
  • Using Group Items Command
  • Using Classify
  • Working with Duplicates & Replicants
  • Using Group Similar Items
  • Using Smart Groups
  • Using Tags
  • Converting Data to Tags
  • Merging Tags
  • Global vs. Database Specific Tag Views

Thanks for the SCO on DEVONthink series. I’m contemplating on DT for some time. Not sure if it is worth the high price. I just bought Affinity Publisher, Designer and Photo for just $100, half the price of DT.
But here is my question: Joe Kissel says in his book that DEVONthink is many things: a snippet keeper, a note taker, a mind-mapping program, and more. Do you use DEVONthink for all of that? Or do you use other apps in addition? For example, you reviewed in the past 2Do and Things. Or would I still need an app like Mail Archiver X or EagleFiler, or can DEVONthink take care of all that? Or is it really only an enhanced Finder?

Thanks

Thanks so much for the comment! I use DT mainly for Document management and for projects/research. The search features and way it shows other documents that have similar themes is what gives it so much power. Also the new automation features that add Hazel like automation to the process along with the fact I can sync the databases between devices makes it a great application for me. I don’t really use it just to collect that other information but it certainly could be used that way. You won’t need mail archives or Eaglefiler if you have DT as it handles both of those things. You could also turn it into a task manager like things but I like the simplicity and elegance of things better. Hope that helps!
