Tutorial Description

DEVONthink is one of the most powerful database applications made for the Mac. In fact, some people have said this one application makes it worth getting a Mac just to run it!

In the third of this three-part foundation tutorial, Todd covers how to work with your data once it is inside DEVONthink. He then goes on to show how to use the powerful search AI to find the files you have in your database and some of the automation features that are new to version 3. From there he shows how to sync your databases with your other devices and ways you can get your information out of DEVONthink if you want to use it somewhere else.

A great series, I had forgotten just how good this app was. I used to use it constantly for documenting my job and upgraded to version 2 a few years ago but a change of job meant that I switched away. Version 3 has a lot of new features and Todd’s examples of how he uses it has made me want to start using it again. Thank you!

This series is excellent. The pace is just right, and the explanations of the many features of DEVONthink 3 are lucid. I have been using the app for some time but still learned about a number of helpful features that I had somehow overlooked or had forgotten about. Thanks for a wonderful series!

Wow Richard! Thanks so much for taking the time to comment! I really appreciate your feedback and I’m so happy you learned some new things along the way. I love this application and it is one of the apps at the center of my own set up. Thanks again and have a great rest of your weekend!

Were you able to automate the changing of the creation date? How did you do that?

I just want to find out how to synchronize DEVONthink 3 and DEVONthink to go.....
Searching the library of DEVONthink entries... I've found 2 x videos, and 'both' of them barely scratch the surface of Bonjour sync and barely 'reference' it....

Hi Michael! Thanks for the comment. I’m so sorry the existing screencasts did to answer your question. I will look into doing a tip video related to syncing and DEVONthink in the future. Maybe I can answer any questions you have related to syncing over bonjour if you want to leave a comment here. Hope you have a great week!

Thanks Todd,

In the hope that this thread may benefit the 'next' person looking to do this, I can confirm that I did indeed eventually find 'the' way to sync via Bonjour, between my iPhone 12 and MacBook Pro (on the same network).

On mobile...
In DEVONthink To Go...
1. Go into Settings > Sync: Locations and press the Edit link if you already have a sync location
enabled
2. You should see a sync location for the Mac. Click the green plus button next to it.
3. Set the options per your choice and touch Save.
4. Enter the Bonjour password you entered on the Mac.
5. When it has connected, touch the sync location to show the databases list and flip the switch next
to database(s) you want to import.
The scenario above is the most common when using Mac and mobile.

It's beyond belief how difficult it was to find this information. I had to contact 'support' who eventually mailed back a 'link' to this solution.
