After a lengthy beta testing period, DEVONthink 4 is out and in this video, Lee kicks the tyres of the best new features that come with it. It will come as no surprise to users of DEVONthink that AI is now a core addition to the feature-set, however unlike other applications, it's not forced upon you at every turn. In fact, you can install the latest version and not even realise that AI is available - which is a good thing. It can be used in a small capacity, or as the main framework behind all of your work - the choice is yours.
Lee will walk you through how to configure DEVONthink to use a 3rd party AI engine for basic queries, summarisation, transcriptions, advanced queries with multiple documents, even writing scripts with the built-in Script Assistant! Not all features are AI-centric. DEVONthink 4 now introduces Audit-Proof Databases, which prevent modifications to ANY files contained within, we have automatic versioning for documents that are edited within DEVONthink as well as the ability to add a Table Of Contents to any PDF file. It's a solid update.

Great explanations! However, I'm wondering whether those AI features wouldn't be integrated in macOS if Apple Intelligence would be fully operational. In other words, it seems that DevonThink Pro does a job Finder is unable to do for the time being. Not sure I'm right though.
Hi Gérard - certainly not at this stage. Apple Intelligence needs to go up a few levels before it could compete with what DEVONthink can do utilising dedicated resources such as ChatGPT and Claude. That said, it could well be the case in the future however for now, I've found myself for real using the in-built Chat feature in DEVONthink to find documents easier and summarise information.

After a little research I found that the free ChatGPT account doesn't support an API, but the paid version does. There is a separate API only PAYG offering that is a lot less expensive, so you can keep your free account and pay for the API separately as DT uses it.
ChatGPT explained the costs for document summaries and also how to configure it so that you don't go over your limits.
You did mention you were not going into the specifics of setting up the API, hopefully someone finds this useful if they have only the free account and don't want to pay for a subscription.
