Tutorial Description

In this episode, Rosemary shows you the new Shortcuts application for iOS and iPadOS. There are a lot of changes in this greatly improved version of the app, now part of the iOS and iPadOS operating systems. They range from home and personal automation, the addition of many actions to automate common tasks, as well as much broader support for third-party apps.

Rose also shares two of her custom shortcuts and shows you, step by step, how to build them from scratch.

The full tutorial covers:

  • Overview
  • Siri Alias
  • Share
  • New System Actions
  • Third-party Integration
  • Personal Automations
  • Home Automations
  • Using Bluetooth Mouse in iOS 13
  • Current Weather Notification Shortcut
  • Building Custom Shortcuts

Note from Don - This week's tutorial gives you a good grounding in Shortcuts, but if you want to dive even deeper, Rosemary has just published her "Take Control of Shortcuts" book. This takes exploring Shortcuts to the next level and looks at some of the more advanced features and usages of Shortcuts on iOS, with 15 sample shortcuts to get familiar with. I heartily recommend this book if you seriously want to take shortcuts on iOS and iPadOS to the next level.

Sorry, but while I have no difficulty hearing the other speakers in their tutorials, this speaker's voice is not clear. The words are both muffled and clipped, and she is speaking too quickly. I can hear it if I work at it, but it's hard work.

I have the same problem as David here. And for a non-English speaker, it's twice the work. Rosemary speaks way too fast. I can barely understand what she's saying. I was really looking forward to this screencast, but I have to give up.

I also thought that Rosemary spoke too fast, but that was not my main difficulty. I was hoping that she would demonstrate HOW a person would actually run a shortcut but she didn't. Do you use Siri? Do you go to the Shortcuts app on your iPhone or iPad, search for the one you want and tap it? She didn't say. She plunged down into the weeds in rapid-fire speech tapping here & there. It was never clear to me how I would actually USE the Shortcuts app in my life. BTW, I'm not an idiot. I worked at an Apple Store for six years, teaching customers how to use their iPhones and Macs, but I left before iOS 13 came out so Shortcuts are new to me. I launched this tutorial with great anticipation and then spent 40 minutes getting increasingly frustrated. Sorry to be so negative; I'm a huge fan of ScreenCastsOnline. This was a rare disappointment.
