Ulysses is yet another app to switch from a traditional single payment purchase to a new recurring subscription model.
As with previous apps, this has caused much consternation as many people refuse to adopt a subscription model for software applications.
In this episode, I take a look at Ulysses and the changes to the app, along with a potential way of sticking with Ulysses using SetApp, another subscription-based service, but one that gives you access to over 80 Mac apps in addition to Ulysses.
If you really don't want to go down the subscription route, I also take a look at two alternatives to Ulysses: Byword and iA Writer, two terrific, cross-platform, single-payment apps.
Of course, we can't forget to mention Scrivener when considering powerful writing apps. Since I've already covered Scrivener extensively on other shows, you'll find the link to those in the show notes.

One of the problems of keeping on top of the latest developments in Mac and iOS is the sheer number of updates to apps over time. These can range from minor to major updates, and are designed to fix issues or introduce brand new functionality. Ulysses is a fantastic plain text editor for the Mac, iPad and iPhone. It allows you to create plain text documents or “sheets†and use markdown formatting to control the final look and format of your writing. PDF, ePub, HTML, Text, DOCX and even publishing to Medium are all included in this great app, giving you ultimate control of your writing.
As well as a wealth of formatting and exporting capabilities, Ulysses takes away the pain of managing your documents across all your devices. All your sheets are contained in a single Ulysses library, that syncs amazingly well with iCloud. It will even allow you to edit external files from a multitude of sources.
Please note that Ulysses has moved to a subscription service as of August 2017

Ulysses III is a text editor for the Mac with a slightly different approach. Instead of files and folders, Ulysses allows you to create sheets and groups of sheets (or Stacks in the iOS app), just like sheets and stacks of paper.
All your written information can be managed within the application and sync'd via iCloud, either to other Macs or Daedalus Touch on iOS.
Add in a beautiful UI, support for Markdown, Markdown XL and Textile formatting, Ulysses takes a fresh approach to text editing.
