Markdown is a powerful and yet simple markup language that allows you to create formatted text documents, all while writing in plain text. These plain text documents can be opened and read in any text editor.
In this tutorial from Allison, you learn the basics of the Markdown syntax, like bold and italics, as well as making checkboxes, create links, and even embed image links, to name a few. Allison also shows you several applications that support Markdown, including her favorite, Typora, plus TextEdit and BBEdit (with Brett Terpstra's Marked as a companion renderer). She plays around with Markdown in Meta's Messenger, Apple's own Notes, and much more.

I strongly urge you to check out Macdown; a masterful Markdown editor. I have used most of the others and find Macdown far less tedious.

I look forward to editing Allison's videos so much for exactly this kind of reason. It's impossible not to get swept away by the enthusiasm, passion and little one-liners like this that just make me smile. Oh - and FYI, I"ve started using BBEdit a lot more myself as my main text editor of choice, and I"m slowly learning the ropes with it. Not enough for a video yet, but it's very much on my radar once I'm at a stage where I think I have enough to share. Unless Allison learns it quicker and beats me to the punch! (Which I'd be very happy with as I learn so much from her)
@Martin Turner - I first wrote about Macdown in 2015 for my podcast, but sadly, it hasn't been updated since 2019, and it never even made it to version 1.0. It stopped at 0.8.0d71. I actually checked in on it before creating the tutorial because I used to love it.
@T R Yay! I say things like that mostly to entertain myself but I'm glad at least one other person likes my goofy sense of humor.
Huge fan of your sense of humor, your critical thinking approach, and really good topic choices. And I'm oftened humbled by your subtle show of 'compassion' (if thats the right word?) for making tech stuff accessible to non-techies.... AND your unabashed nerdiness always makes me smile.
I could go on about how great i think you are. I am also female - and thats why i used the word 'hero' .....but the fact of being female.... would mean nothing if YOU did not IMPROVE every tech thing i listen to (that you've guested on, or co-hosted.)
For Example, I recommend 'Taming The Terminal' (ttt.com) to anyone trying to learn command line on a Mac. And your SO self-effacing!
request: I would LOVE if if you did a updated BBEdit tutorial for SCO. I originally got my SCO subscription for the BBEdit tutorial, but its pretty outdated, and BBEdit's own manual and YouTube tutorials are quite lacking.

Oh gosh, T R, if my mother was still alive, I would call her and read her your note! I'm going to keep this one whenever I'm doubting myself. On the "compassion", I look at it as there are SO many things I don't know how to do, and I wouldn't like it if someone talked down to me for not knowing how to trim roses, or how to fix a compressor in a refrigerator, or speak Portuguese. I'm glad you liked Taming the Terminal.
I'll give a thought to BBEdit. I don't actually use it, but I've always felt I should learn it, and teaching is the best way to learn!
