Tutorial Description

Continuing on from last week, I complete the process of paring down my standard build on my MacBook Pro in preparation for migrating to the 11" MacBook Air.

In the show, I identify some of the additional space hogs and investigate different strategies for keeping disk usage to a minimum, to provide the optimum footprint for the 64GB Flash Storage on the MacBook Air. In detail, the show covers:

  • Deciding on what to do with Mail
  • Syncing Selected Folders in DropBo
  • xVMWare Image Deletion
  • Mobile Devices Software Updates
  • Moving iMovie Projects & Files
  • iPhoto or Aperture Considerations
  • Clean My Mac

Once I reach the magic target, I also show you the migration process using the OSX Migration Assistant, to transfer the MacBook Pro build to the MacBook Air via a USB drive.

With the user account and applications successfully migrated, the show also takes you through some additional migration tasks including:

  • Setting Up Remote Disk with a Desktop Machine
  • Creating a Multiple Sync strategy for iPhone across Two Macs
  • Syncing Applications

Finally, I did a quick comparison between the 11" MacBook Air (1.4GHz, 2GB RAM, 64 GB Flash Storage] and the 15" MacBook Pro [2.66GHz, 4GB RAM, 256GB SSD drive).

Seemingly poles apart, in both their specification (and price points). For each machine, I compare application start up time (for Safari, iTunes, Garageband and iMovie) and video encoding.

You may be surprised at the results!
