Calendar on Mac

Continuing our focus on the apps we get as part of our operating systems, this week we are looking at Calendar on the Mac. There is no shortage of third-party calendar applications to tempt us, and it's true that many of them are compelling and offer unique power user features along with beautiful, modern interfaces. However if you need an application that is reliable, connects with a large number of calendar providers, and interacts with other built-in applications like Mail and Contacts, then you need only look at Apple's Calendar app.

In this video, you learn about all of the main features with Lee as your guide, from the basics of event entry and management, all the way to configuring time-to-leave alerts as well as printing full-size planners.

Craft Updates

This short video complements shows 1341 and 1343, Lee's deep dive into Apple Notes. There are a few commands you can use with Siri to create, find, and read your notes, and Lee shows you how this is done here. There is also one feature that has been unavailable since iOS 16 and that's the ability to append to a note. There is a simple workaround using Shortcuts however, and you learn about it in this video.

Arc Browser Updates

OmniFocus 4

Obsidian is a powerful app, but it doesn't make it easy to capture things on iOS. Opening Obsidian requires your whole vault and all the associated plugins need to load, so until the developers add an improved workflow for mobile quick capture, iPhone users are left to figure out something using third-party apps. Funnel makes it easy to capture things quickly to Obsidian, including images — even if you don't use iCloud to sync your data. In this short video, Mike shows you how Funnel can assist you with quick capture of text and images in Obsidian, but it can also be used with several other apps to perform the same task.

Focus Modes have been a part of our Apple devices since 2021, yet find a little resistance among the more casual user. They can look a little complex to set up and as a result many people simply don't use them. In this video, Lee explains what Focus Modes are and how to set them up on both iOS and the Mac. You learn how to configure notifications for both people and applications, set up automatic schedules as well as Focus filters. Rather than showcasing a single app, in this full show Darcy introduces four applications designed and released by Amico Apps.

The first is a utility that allows you to quit multiple programs at the same time, as well as schedule app quitting due to inactivity. Another that makes accessing emoji on the Mac very easy, using shortcuts.

We've been spoiled with the quality of Personal Knowledge Management (PKM) applications recently. One such app that has been around for a while is NotePlan.

NotePlan has some great features found in similar products, such as backlinking, Daily Notes and utilising Markdown syntax to create your notes. It does, however, bring some new ideas to the table, such as integrating with your calendar to allow you to timeblock directly from the interface, using ChatGPT to answer queries in-line and also introduces the concept of weekly, monthly, even annual notes to keep you on track with your goals.
