Tutorial Description

In this episode, we're completing our Kagi trilogy by exploring Orion Browser, the privacy-focused WebKit browser. Unlike most modern browsers that run on Google's Chromium, Orion is built on the same WebKit engine as Safari—giving you exceptional speed, energy efficiency, and battery life on Mac, while using half the memory of Safari and far less than Chrome.

Lee walks you through everything from vertical tabs and Focus Mode to profiles, web apps, and Kagi service integration, showing you how Orion delivers both simplicity for everyday users and powerful features for advanced workflows. He also dives into some truly unique capabilities that set Orion apart, including programmable buttons that let you automate browsing tasks, and the ability to turn any website into a standalone app.

Whether you're looking for a Safari alternative with more flexibility, want to escape the Chromium monoculture, or simply need a browser that respects your privacy while giving you complete control, Orion noe offers a compelling option.

I have played with Orion in the past and drifted away to other browsers; cannot remember why - but I note there are quite a few complaints in Reddit about bugginess of Orion. Last night using Orion I watched the screencast without problem; this morning after latest update the screencast video does not work - message The video could not be loaded, either because the server or network failed or because the format is not supported. Compatibility mode did not correct but works fine in Safari. I would like Orion to work for me and will try for a few weeks as my primary browser. The tutorial was good I always find something that I hadnt given any consideration which I might find useful when I see it real world use.

Thanks for the comment Gary. So I checked the video on version 1.0.0 - all fine. Updated to 1.0.2 (the December 31st release) and it all still played fine. Although the error you point out I did have on Safari, when using the Tahoe betas and so had to re-encode a large number (500-ish!) videos to make them work on Safari in Tahoe!. I didn't have it for this video though so unsure why that is happening for you in Orion.

That said - I've not had too many 'bugs' to speak of when using Orion - although I'm currently working on many browsers to put them through their paces in readiness for more upcoming videos so I'm not on it 100% of the time.

Perfect Timing. I downloaded Orion when first trying out Kagi search(cause i figured i might need thae search integration), but have been using kagi find through safari extensions . So glad to have a userful internet search back since using Kagi. At minute 3 you already answered my #1 question before testing out Orion .. (its WebKit not Chrome!. ) interesting. I generally switch between safari and Vivaldi (chrome based), maybe by the end of this screencast, i'll decide, whether or not i wanna replace safari with Orion.

Great topic choices again Lee. You've been hitting the sweet spot for SCO topics and content this past year. Great Job and Thanks.

I think you are right when it comes to options for replacing Safari - there aren't many WebKit ones out there so Orion remains a viable option then when you want a Chromium browser, there is almost too much choice.

And re: topic choices, I'm really trying to strike that balance to keep as many members happy as possible - so really appreciate that, Made me smile on a Sunday!

I propose we say 'Gaggling' instead of 'googling' when searching DuckDuckGo. I almost never 'google 'anymore, I only 'Gaggle.' (....a 'gaggle' of geese.... just incase the pun wasn't obvious.) Nomeclature is half the marketing battle (imho).

I"m all over Gaggling. Needs to happen - great suggestion!
